Hi there all... Currently have a SAAB 9-5 Aero and although a cracking car - I fancy a bit of open top motoring for the summer!

New as possible - No more than £3.5-£4K - Must be able to get 4 people in (well 2+ baby seat!) and have a fairly good boot... Would like something that is not too bad a steer, coming from the Aero and being an ex Alfa owner...

I have narrowed it down to the 307 CC and the Megane Cabriolet.

Like these:

And these:

Also is the Astra 2.2/2.0 Turbo Cabriolet any good:

Any opinions or alternatives?

Cheers

Reedy

New as possible - really???

I'd sooner put my money into a VERY tidy E36 BMW 328i for £3k

Or if age is more important than performance a E46 320i for £4k

Has to be the 3 series!

I seem to remember reading that the 307cc is the car least likely to be driven by a man, based on insurance records.

Why have the feminine (& fwd) cars over the great sounding 328? Get the BMW, you know it makes sense. biggrin

As mentioned above, BMW is the one to go for. The 2.8 M52 is a peach. Delightfully torquey with a (deceptively) smooth delivery. Would suit an auto too.

Alternatively, why not a cabrio equivalent of the SAAB?

307CC and Megane Cabrio = for girls.

Having experienced my Mum's Megane Cabrio when she had it i'd recommend not buying one. Slow, thirsty, uncomfortable, camp, handle terribly, faulty (it will be faulty). Also the only thing more imasculating than driving one is having to take it to Renault to have a headlight or indicator bulb changed (which you will have to, about twice a week) unless you have the time and inclination to faff about doing it yourself (which you won't wnat to becuase you might break a nail, which will be a concern for you, becuase you'll own a Megane Cabrio).

BMW all the way...

E46 convertible every time.

We had a brand new 206CC and it was the worst car we have ever owned.

Think typical French build quality but 10 times worse. I hated it so much we got rid after a year.

Says its a 318 so pretty slow especially as a convertible, it does look lovely though, I always thought those wheels looked superb.

Get the BMW, or perhaps one of these:

Step away from the Frenchies.

Go BMW.

Could not think of a worse 'steer' than a 307 CC?!

The Megane isn't bad, my fat-bottomed hatch was certainly good fun on the right road. Can't speak for the CC though... Build quality and electrical/mechanical reliability though, run for the fking hills!

If the 307 is anything like our 308 I'd imagine you'll find the ride harsh, badly damped, the driving position an uncomfortable hybrid between VW Transporter and Golf, and the gearbox loose, indirect and lazy. Other than that, it's not a bad car.

I'd be looking for a 6-cylinder E46, a 1.8t or 2.0t 9-3 or a 1.8T/3.0 quattro Audi A4 Cabrio.

true true, must be careful of PH stalkers.....

Point take though even though I'm fortunate in that no sat nav has ever got anyone to my front door from my postcode.
