One question. Does it work, or is it bad for your car?

(I've seen some bad reviews)

I don't think it's bad for your car and I personally don't think it works.

Cheers. I just read some very very disturbing reviews online. However you don't know how much of that is legit

It returned worse MPG in my econobox than anywhere else's fuel under the same driving conditions.

Putting in ethanol is bad for most cars not made in the last 5 - 10 years.

Really going to suck when they make it 10%.

Never noticed any difference either. I've been put of using it though since I've read some of the rumours as to what they put in it to make it "fuel save". I still use it if I have to but if I know there's a alternative station close by I tend to use one of them.

All these rumours... do these apply to Shell V Power too?

V-power remaining the same. I've stopped putting the fuelsave in my racecar now due to the rumours etc...

I wouldn't be surprised if it was exactly the same as the old stuff, to be honest. I'm distinctly dubious of the so-called benefits of different brands of petrol (RON rating aside, since I understand that).

I've certainly not noticed a difference in the Lotus. The Octavia needs super unleaded anyway.

On a slightly different note does anyone have a shell drivers club/points card?I got one earlier last year, thought i might as well try and get something back yet despite going out of my way to try and fill up at shell all the time and spending an estimated £3500 on v power petrol and regular diesel in that time, all i got at the end of the year was a £10 fuel voucher!!

I think i'l just fill up anywhere from now on.

Vpower had a pretty large price drop a while ago and i'm pretty sure they changed it to include ethanol as it was the only fuel i would put in the porsche but now i'm not so happy.

My car has no knock sensor and need 98/99+ ron so i don't run normal unleaded, but i've already had one car die whilst running tesco's 99, so ethanols not top of my friends list.

On ~£1000 of fuel I got ~£3 back, so sounds about right. Generous aren't they!?

Better than nothing though, and combined with the AA card giving 3% cashback on fuel purchases it all helps.

Slightly o/t but I went to Cornwall for New Years and Shell garages were selling unleaded at £1.319 a litre when around Surrey they all seem to be £1.339-£1.359, are Shell profiteering out of us (perceived) wealthy Surrey people?

Its a joke,I had one about 9-10 yrs ago when i had a mitsubishi evo and ran it on v power all the time .IIRC i used to get around £50-£60 at the end of each year, cant remember what i spent with them but it seems they are a bit tighter these days. I think i'l use my local tesco from now on,its nearer.

Does Tesco Momentum have increased ethonol levels? I've been using Momentum rather than Vpower as it seems a bit cheaper and its on my way to work.

What exactly is so wrong with Ethonol? (I'm a newbie at fuels)

But I've noticed that Momentum lasts longer per tank than Vpower, although when on Vpower the car does seem to drive a little better.

My car is about 8-9 years old, and stupid Suzuki recommend higher octane. When regular stuff is put in the car runs terribly and MPG drops very badly. + the engine management light seems to like to pop on occassionally when I dont use higher octane :S

I normally get about £15 after 3 months so I must use more fuel than I thought! (usually £60-80 a week in work car on shell fuel card)

It promotes corrosion of metals
It attacks some rubbers and plastics (e.g. Ducati petrol tanks)
It has a lower stoichiometirc ratio than petrol, i.e. you need to burn more of it for a given volume or air.
It has less energy per volume than petrol. This means worse fuel economy.
It can produce acetaldehyde when burnt, which is a carcinogen.

On top of everything the reason for putting in petrol is to promote renewable energy, but it seems unlikely that we could ever produce enough ethanol from biomass to replace hydrocarbon fuels
