This is something which not many people ask anymore, because most modern cars are reliable and dont fall to pieces.

Nowadays I think people tend to dislike particular models for other reasons - more like blandness, or lack of driving enjoyment, or low equipment levels rather than poor engineering.
In the 70s and 80s, there was a whole host of truly awful cars on the market worldwide so it was easy to poke derision at so many models. However today, even the Koreans are making cars which last a long time and are not too badly engineered.

So, I ask this question: What do you think is the absolute worst new car available today?

This used to be so easy, but now I struggle - I would like to suggest the Diahatsu Sirion. A hideous plasticky box with no performance. There must be more though..

Anything bearing the moniker 'Perodua' is pretty unpleasant

Well, a Clio is arguably a better car than a Ferrari 458 Italia... Cheaper to buy, insure, service, tax, more economical, more practical, can seat more people.

The point is, what criteria are you using to define "good" and "bad"?

For me, right now, the best car in the world is a 7 year old BMW 320d Touring. A new M Sport 335i might be better if I was writing this for Evo, but I'm not. The worst car is a Bugatti Veyron. Ridiculously expensive, hideously impractical, a Perodua thing would be better for me.

Another suggestion - Renault Fluence. Old technology, 4 speed, horrid plastic steering wheel, and exposed metal around the door frames inside the car. Poor quality dash/stereo. Like something from the early 90s.

This would unhesitatingly get my nomination.

My heart always sinks when I go to pick up the keys for a hire car and I see a little Vauxhall badge. frown

Horrible, horrible cars. Even the Hyundai i10 I had recently, whilst being obviously crap, had more character and personality.

Vocal Minority I agree Perodua make awful cars. We dont see them here but i have seen one in Europe - dreadful.

In answer to the question about criteria, I mean a car so badly designed and made that it is a bad product. There are alot of boring and bland boxes around, but these days few of them are badly made or awful/dangerous to drive.

Agree with you - Once rented a Corsa. Appallingly made, poor handling, uncomfortable and the interior stank of the glue they use to put it together.

Why 'obviously crap'?

Really? It's just a current Mégane with a different front and a boot.

Haven't yet driven a Vauxhall I like, with the exception of the VX220 and the Monaro, neither of which are actually Vauxhalls.

Yes! Good selection. Driven a Golf bluemotion DSG in the UK last year. The car itself was great and very nicely made, but the engine was a horror. Noisy, nasty diesel engine ( i hate diesels) and if you dont disable the function with a switch, it turns the engine off every time you stop! Stressful, irritating and a ridiculous idea.

So what makes the Daihatsu Sirion worse than all the other hideous plastic boxes with no performance? FWIW the previous generation Sirion (up to 2005 which I still regard as modern) came in a 2WD and 4WD 'Rally' variant, and they go pretty well for a normally aspirated 1.3L engine.

I have just driven a Merc A-class and I feel this is a contender! Awful road holding, bouncy/fidgety ride and cheap interior. Not exactly cheap, poor trip computer, expensive servicing. Mercedes make a car for everyone...who would want one of these?

This is the reason it is hard to exactly choose - there are alot of boring plasticky efforts around... that was one of the worst i can think of !

I got a late registered old shape Astra when I hired a car from Hertz a few months ago, wasn't happy, but figured I could live with it until I discovered it didn't have a aux input for my iPod (every other Hertz car I've had over the previous two years had one). I could have lived with no music or an astra, but not both. Went back to desk, asked for something else (the benefits of the Hertz Gold Circle) and was given some boxy Kia thing. No rocket ship, not the nicest thing I'd ever driven, but much nicer than the astra and had excellent connectivity options for the Stereo. I was actually quite impressed with it.

Only other hire car I refused was an old shape Vectra, which suggests my dislike of this manufacture may be a pattern.

Chevrolet Spark.

The worst car on sale today by some margin imho, completely devoid of any character, cheap plastics (Coming from a long time Renault driver), handle like a pig, gutless engines that still return poor fuel economy. Horrendous.

Golf.

Not because it's a bad car, but because of it's pumped up over inflated opinion of itself as though it's the last and first word in all things automotive.
