What would be an interesting old car to do a 20 min commute in? Not looking to buy right now, but just musing. Once I've got the bike back (as backup in case I need to work on the car) I might be able to afford to get rid of the Clio for something a bit more interesting.

Something fairly reliable / very simple
So usual suspects I guess:
Mini
MGB
Beetle

Or more like it:
Mk1 Fiesta
Fiat 126
Hillman minx
Cortina mk4

Offer 750, buy at 850. Plenty of cash in the pot for sorting out any niggles. smile

205 gti? French, and electrically not the most resilient but quite rust resistant and a good drive.

Old Skool Golf?

My mate had an MGB and ive got a Classic Mini you wouldn't want to rely on either as your only car.

I had an MGB as a daily driver a few years ago.

Never let me down...astonishingly...but it didn't!

No answers so far are actually 'classic' cars.

Try this:

Mk1 Scirocco. Perfectly possible to find one for £1500, but it really helps to get to know an old fogey who owns a mint on that they occasionally pop to the shops in and have no idea how much it's worth.

define Classic ?

I believe that all of the suggestions so far would fall into that category ?

I love that Saab - why do I look at these threads?

The P6 is nice as well - I too struggle to think of anything post-1980 as classic but that's 'cos I'm an old fart!

I do like that P6. Pug and the 924/944 obvious contenders as well.
Was thinking Vauxhall Viva as well.

Edit: Found this-

Just gave myself a bit of a man-boner there.
What do those 2l P6's do to the gallon? Leathery woody waftyness...

A Jaguar X300 would be a good choice. A perfect blend of modernity and old school cool.

For something a bit more frugal, a Mk2 Golf GTI would fit the bill.

The Saab is a good call - very usable classic. Do look carefully for rust though - they were very solid well made cars but they are at 20+ years old now...

PS - that one is an LPT, not a full turbo Still useful and easily tuned though.

I'd say that single carb and autobox makes it pretty undesirable. But I do like the Saab.
