I have a my car for sale on Auotrader.co.uk. A guy has called and then we have had a few text messages backwards and forwards.
I have agreed to sell for £10,500. He has offered a £500 deposit by way a bank transfer.
He has asked me to email an invoice with the details of the sale on, a copy of the logbook specifically the 2nd page and off course my acc number and sort code. He has said that he will then transfer the £500.

Just to add he has since texted me his details and his address is in Portugal.

Any advice please ?

Done it before as buyer, but it was a trade sale, and all in the UK.

I sold a car last summer, it all sounded rather dodgy but everything turned out fine.

A guy emailed me about my car, offered to pay the asking price but asked if I would accept a cheque or bankers draft, I said no only cash on collection. He told me his phone didn't work as he was abroad but would be flying into the UK on a certain date and the phone would then work fine. He then asked me to deliver to Gatwick airport which I agreed to. Several emails later he told me cash would be a problem so would I accept a bank transfer, eventually I gave him my bank details (of an account with no money in and no overdraft facility that I had been planning to close) and told him as long as the money was in there I would deliver the car, the money showed up the day before I weas due to deliver the car so I withdrew the money and deposited it else where and delivered the car as requested. All went well.

Hardly a huge amount.
Plus car must be a bit cheaper than what it would cost to buy in europe?

Say the magic word hehe

Edit - I simply meant there's little to no risk in accepting buyer's deposit via bank transfer.

I've sold lots of cars on ebay and taken a deposit or payment by paypal without them being viewed.
The issue with this one is its not sold via and auction and the guy lives in Portugal.

have it paid into an account that you do not use, that way what is he going to get out of it some account details that has no money in it?

I sold a car a couple of years ago to somebody travelling from the mainland. Sales was for a much smaller sum but I was transferred a deposit and arranged to collect said buyer from a local train station. Cash taken for the balance. We swapped email and calls. No real hitches.

All is well that ends well.
Somebody rang this morning and offered the full asking price, paid good deposit and will collect at weekend.

Someone is going to travel a long way & at some expense to look at/buy a car, with no deposit would you hold the car until he turned up?
