So someone let's you through, how do you thank them? If I've got my lights on I'll flick to sidelights,if not I'll give them a raised finger(not the bird smile )and poss a little nod.

Over to you....

Wave in the day, very short flash at night.

Rant and rant and rant at all the bds who don't thank me when I've stopped for them. And relax.

Daylight hours - index finger raised from the wheel and a nod. None of this flapping your arms as if you're trying to warn the other driver of an imminent disaster.

Night driving - Flick to sidelights. I thought I was the only to do this! Whenever someone thanks me they seem to think the most appropriate thing to do is singe my retinas as a display of thanks... Flicking to sidelights always seemed to make more sense to me.

Dropping to sidelights at night for me too, makes far more sense, 200W at close range is a punishment, not a gesture of thanks!

In the day I don't wave my arms around, but one finger seems a little idle so I just give it all my fingers outstretched while my thumb stays wrapped around the top of the wheel - not excessive, but seems obvious enough to everyone!

Oh, and if I want to thank someone for letting me in or anything else when I'm in front of them, I use the hazards too. Oops.

take both hands off the wheel to wave wildly. If pulled out in front of them, drive very slowly and take their lead by letting out every single car you see in front of you for the rest of the journey. They love you for it

(or, just raise a hand in either direction, and if I let them through, acknowledge their thanks with a raised index finger in a non- americ an swearing manner)

Flash and/or wave depending on the time of day.

Or a wave and cheery blast on the horn if being allowed past a badly parked vehicle.

I now find myself having to thank other drivers so rarely that normally i follow them home to find out their address so i can send them flowers.

You do realise that most readers are in the south east of england and won't have a clue what you are talking about

People who don't wave are people who work for the Devil.evil

Probably going to get blasted for bad etiquette, but....

During the day: Quick flick of full beams + a red Indian 'how' hand gesture.

At Night: Generally nothing. I'll do the 'how' gesture to keep my conscience clear even if they can't see it, but switching to side lights is too fiddly compared to a blast of the full beam.

Also if someone makes a gap for me on the motorway, or lets me out in front of them I tend to go for a quick flick of the hazard warning lights.

Daytime will get a wave, a raised finger (not middle) or a flash of the hazard lights... Night time will get either flash of hazards or a main beam flash... I do not worry about burning eyeballs out, there are more eye burning lights out there apparently which are worse than a quick flash of main beams, DRLs, foglights, Audi brake lights... So my quick flash of mains are perfectly acceptable.

I lean forward and hold my hand up by the windscreen so it can be seen, day or night. I class that as a wave. I don't flash as I find it really irritating myself, especially at night. I've never seen an index finger in 33 years driving and would probably return one if someone did it to me. eek

Don't really like the one finger off the steering wheel as thanks.

It smacks of a token effort somehow, luike "I suppose I have to thank you, but I was coming therough whatever".

My favourite is the women-only 'hand attached to the steerong wheel by powerful elastic', where the hand is removed from the wheel as quickly and for as short a time as possible.
