Are the 3.1 diesels rubbish?

There's a thread in 'offroad' about this exact question. Early vm's are head gasket risks, later Mercs 2.7 have injector seal issues.

Avoid vm dervs. 2.7 should be fine. You looking at the one after mine?

beware the early VM diesel's... they need the head bolts re-tightened every 40k which almost never happens, resulting in head gasket failing and head warping.

I'm unfamiliar with the newer engines.

Lots of diesel owners on there.

All diesels in all motors, not just Jeeps have problems. Old diesels are a serious PITA hence why my WJ Grand Cherokee is a 4l petrol.

Under £5k will easily get you in a 2003 Grand Cherokee 2.7 diesel. Bought a 52 plate late last year.

my 04 reg 2.7crd with 90k was advertised for 4900 but no takers (only put it on ph mind you) now with a dealer for a grand more......

The 2.7 is better than the 3.1 ?

How do they both stack up against the petrol or LPGd petrol?

I do know the 2.7 crd was better than the 3.1. I cant remember what issues there were but i think there were a few, some being mentioned above. iirc fuel economy wasn't good either.

I'm not sure on the petrol ones but i think the 4.0 was meant to be quite good all round, very reliable solid motor.
