My car was damaged outside my house whilst at working and my insurers have instructed Accident Exchange to manage my claim.

There is about £1000 worth of damage to my 2004 Alfa 156 Sportwagon and AE are going to provide me with a 2011 BMW 1 series as a replacement while repairs are completed at the Alfa Romeo bodyshop.

Seems to good to be true I should get a 20k courtesy car for free while repairs are completed.

Do I have reason to be concerned or just grateful?

It's only a 1 series. Probably nice to drive but still a mainstream hatchback. It's not like they're lending you an Aston to tool around in for a week. I wouldn't worry.

This is why everyones insurance is so expensive, they will bill the others insurance comapny an absolute fortune for the hire car.

It's today's equivalent of your car - fleets don't keep 2004 cars! A Focus or Astra is getting on for £20K list.

Of course they're giving you the best car they can get away with so they can whip the arse of the 3rd party insurer. Your insurance company gets commission for this.

1 series has reasonable residual value compared with some other brands so probably makes more sense to their balance sheet when they come to move it on.

I guess the rational is my Alfa is perceived to be 'prestige' and so they are providing a prestige brand of car.

They gave my mate a top of the range Toureg for 6 weeks while they decided whether or not to write of his £800 Vitara & we wonder why insurance is so fekkin expensive.

yes, insurance companies must have some commission thing going on. A friend's £2k worth of 2003 Focus 1.6 had to get repaired for a third party fault claim. Insurance company immediately delivers to her home address a brand spanking new VW Passat 2.0 TDi

This plus injury claim companies are really putting a toll on everyone else's insurance premiums.rolleyes

Last time I wrote off a car (Killed 3 off mk3 Astra's in 2002, 2005, 2010 LOL) I had a 1.2 corsa delivered, one day, followed by a phone call the next telling me they wanted to collect it immediately as the Astra was a write off, and my policy only included a car from the repairer, if they were repairing it.

I wish to god I'd have said "That's okay, I'm in the South of France, so come and get it next week when I'm back", but instead I said "Well that's all very well, but how am I supposed to get home from work" to which they responded "on the Bus"
