People who put high vis jackets on display when driving (particularly on motorways), normally on the parcel shelf. Wannabe police men or just workmen on the way home?

I've seen a few people do this (and they're inevitably on their own in the car) yet I've never seen anyone put a normal coat on the rear parcel shelf... scratchchin

Maybe they are just so used to driving in Europe.

Maybe not.

Very handy while walking the dog in the evening on country roads, otherwise it is kept in the boot.

Or driving in them ...... does seem a bit of a knob thing.

Often also seen on Big White Motorbikes...... rolleyes
Yup, noticed that too. Ok, they could be going from one high vis job to another, and a very short distance so couldn't be bothered to take it off.

Could be...

I can see your assumption that said people are trying to imitate police officers but from another perspective they do help riders to be seen and their use is not limited to just Honda Pans - of course you look like a wally but a fashion conscious person doesn't really buy such a bike in the first place if looking cool is important.

Legal requirement in many parts of Europe. Habit as a result.

I don't keep mine on display but they are useful to have in your car if you break down or are first at a collision. You can be more help if you can be seen...

Wannabe cops I reckon....likewise with those who stop right in the middle of flyovers going over motorways forcing people to slow down....just in case!

It's a legal requirement to have a hi viz with you, although it doesn't need to be put on the parcel shelf.

Anyone else seen horse riders wearing the ones that from behind at first glance look like they say 'Police' but actually say 'Polite'?

AIUI, a lot of people in cars with UK plates do it in Europe, to prevent being pulled over to check if they have everything that's required; having it on show lets police know they're alright, sort of.

If I've been cycling I'll wear mine, just laziness. Couldn't give a toss what it looked like laugh

I remember overtaking a slow moving BMW on the M5 that had a Hi Vis on the rear shelf and thinking "knob wannabe cop".

Fortunately I wasn't overtaking too quickly, because I looked over while I was passing to see two uniformed police officers in the front seats...

And here was me thinking that a Hi Vis in the back window was a reliable sign that it wasn't a real cop car. Guess I was very wrong.

Do many people in Europe actually get checked for high vis vests? Have been stopped the past two times I've been over there (due to the xenophobia of the police I am sure, not due to the fact I may have been speeding) and haven't been asked - on the most recent occasion they did ask to see documentation for the car though.
