Ouch. Sounds like a bit of an insurance risk even before the ban, or was it a tasty motor?

I doubt any mainstream insurer will touch him, probably best to speak to some brokers and they'll source some that will offer quotes.
But on a 60 plate 730 he's likely to get bummed on the premium, does he have any other points?.

Highly unlikely. A ban for driving without insurance would be discretionary so if this is the case the I would have assumed other circumstances as well TBH.

Assuming that he has points or other offenses then id be trying independent brokers. I think he's in for alot of shopping around, Personally if i was him i would change my car for a year or something and get a years driving under my belt as i think by doing that the insurance premium is likey to rall dramatically or at least alot more mainstream insurers prepared to quote.

Indeed, that's why I asked if he had any other points yes

First thing that popped into my mind. A friend of mine got 3 points and a £60 fine for no insurance :S Definatly not 6month ban territory.

Ah yes. 9 points then a further 6 for no insurance would tend to suggest bargepole territory to a responsible insurer!

Why didn't he sell the car 6months ago when he got banned? The first thing I would have done would be to run a few quotes to see how my premium would change.

Then from their weigh up if keeping the car makes sense. On a 60 plate 730d he will be taking one hell of a hit on depreciation.

A 1998 Passat diesel might provide him with a reasonable quote...

Lease for 2yr - a friend paid him 75% of the rent to use it for so many months.
