Replacement Hire car damaged - will it affect my policy?

king believe this - absolutely fuming!!
Our daily has gone in for repair after being reversed into pre Christmas (whilst parked - non fault) so we have a lovely brand new BMW320 hire car at the moment. Well it was lovely until an air rifle has done damage to three panels whilst it was parked up today. police involved - have incident number but doesn't look like anyone will be charged.
I know I'm liable for the excess which mirrors my current policy - £300. My question is does this claim through the rental car business affect my personal car insurance i.e. NCD or required declarations of claims for future insurance?

The day before I was due to return a loaner and pick up my freshly repaired car, someone managed to hit the hire car the insurance company gave me. I suspect it was a truck/van as every single panel on the drivers side of the car was damaged, including dents and rubber marks on the sills, front and rear bumpers and the wing mirror. No way they could have missed that when it happened.
Because I'll paid the extra £2/day for the excess waiver (as the excess was well into four figures) I was able to just return the car, hand the keys back and walk away. I felt kind of bad doing it, but given the damage I was glad I paid the extra.
Didn't effect the original claim, but I'm assuming it will effect my renewal as I will have to declare it as an accident, as the car was in my care, even though it wasn't my car, wasn't my insurance and wasn't my fault.

Your next insurance form will say
'Have you had an accident in the past four years whether it was your fault or not.'
Unless you lie to this question, then yes, it will affect your premiums.
He would have to answer "yes" anyway due to the fact his own car was in an accident, so the fact the hire car was also in an "accident (arguabley) would be irrelevant. So technically, the answer is no, it won't affect his policy. 'Have you had an accident in the past four years whether it was your fault or not.'

How come it was shot with an Air rifle?

Interesting stuff so far - yes, they do ask have you had any accidents, claims or convictions in the last 5 years. I guess besides declaring the non fault that started this (and two previous, one fault & one non fault) I would probably feel comfortable not including the rental car damage as it's not my claim, it's the rental companies claim against their insurer.

I think I'd do the same. If you had pranged it, then it would be different though. julian64 said:

.
Subject to reading up on it though I have to say it is a very good question as to if it was an accident or, given that it would appear to have been intentional, criminal damange.
.Not trying to state a fact, just saying that it's something I would look into if I were the OP, maybe nothing, may be £500+ worth of savings over the next 5 years if there were something watertight.

Shouldn't affect your policy in anyway, any damage repairs will go through the hire companies insurance not your own.
What, even though he says he's got an excess which mirrors his own policy?Which is standard practice as normally insurance courtesy cars are on your own insurance.
Of course it will affect his future premiums, and vandalism / criminal damage can have a big impact as the insurance company will think the OP could have been targetted so it might well happen again.

OK - so now I know the answer!
Took the hire car back today and...the damage comes off THEIR insurance not mine. My insurance would only be required to pay out if there was a third party involved - damage only is covered by the Rental insurance.
So - good news for me!!!
Yes, good, but - what was the point of the excess mirroring? The excess is irrelevant if you don't have to pay for damage to the vehicle you were driving.Took the hire car back today and...the damage comes off THEIR insurance not mine.
