Why is it people can't seem to differentiate between noise and speed?

It seems strange to me but where I live I have often heard my neigbours complaining about cars speeding along the main road next to the school. It is only ever the owners of louder cars that get singled out as those speeding yet the average school mum in a mpv can race by without making much noise get no grief at all when the reality is they are the worst offenders.

This theory could be demonstrated on a 1/4 mile track. On one side you have a V8 and the other a 1.0 4 banger if they were both travelling toward you at exactly the same speed id wager nearly every non petrolhead would judge the V8 to be going faster based purely on its noise.

Or am I imagining it?

Lets be honest mate, when you hear an engine screaming its tits off, you assume the owner has thrust the move forward pedal deep into the carpet.

And if a 1.0 and a v8 are doing the same speed, I would assume the banger would be the louder one. The v8 would barely have woken up..

I can totally see where your coming from, cars with loud exhausts do get blamed the most!

There's a N reg Civic I see pretty much all the time which has one loud ass exhaust. For the past 3 days its been driving past me on the main road in the mornings and I can still hear the damn thing after for at least a minute when the cars nowhere to be seen on a big empty road. I then saw (well heard) the car today around 4 o clock at the traffic lights and he foot his foot down (and believe me, my ears are still bleeding), then I realised that another car passed me really quickly which I could barely hear, in comparison to the Civic, just won him in a race and the Civic was barely moving when it passed me rofl

My neighbours Griffith sounds like it is about to break the sound barrier at idle. It doesn't start, it explodes into life.
My Chimaera does that biggrin

Yup. A neighbour of a friend came out shouting at me once as he said he's had enough of me coming 'barreling down' the 20mph residential area in my Clio Cup. The fact of the matter was that my car was pretty loud (compared to regular cars) so he assumed I was just going faster. You'd be lucky to get it over 20mph on that street.

The whole underground parking under my apartment reverberates to the V8 beat(ACT manifolds, no cats) of my Chim when I start it up. Fellow residents either comment on how awesome that is, or walk past with their nose up in the air without comment.

Overall, I think that can be classed as a 'win'. smile

My OH has a classic case of 'loud = bad'. Whenever she hears a loud car she mutters 'tosser' or 'why do they need such a loud/fat car, who are they trying to impress?'

True sometimes it is a young thruster trying to make his mark but only the other day she complained at a 67 mustang burbling past. I havent told her my realistic dream car is a Cerb!
