Just done a Sainsburys car insurance quote, all seemed fine, decent price, breakdown cover included, low excess and extra nectar points for the year (which is actually quite valuable for us, already at triple).

However I was then asked which Tracker system is fitted to the vehicle. For reference this is a CLK 320 CDi, 4 years old. Why the hell would it be fitted with a Tracker? It was a reasonably expensive car when new (I believe c.£38k) but distinctly mid-range compared to the CLK 500, 63 AMG or even Black Series.

Sainsburys are the only company ever to request a Tracker be fitted from the quotes I've done. Without them being provided with proof one is, theft cover is excluded. I do wonder if it would be madness to go ahead anyway, although it would be tempting fate with a big pointy stick I suppose.

Anyone else had seemingly daft requests for Trackers on vehicles which don't seem very likely to be stolen?

My dad was with tesco for his fairly new x5. He had been insured by them for years and then out of the blue, they wanted a tracker fitted. He is insured by someone else now.

Must be a supermarket thing smile

Plenty of other insurance companies who won't ask for the tracker.

Most insurance co's usually only require you to have a tracker when the cost of the car you are insuring exceeds a certain value.
My insurance co require a tracker on any car valued at £40k or over regardless of what it is.

Why you need car insurance for your Trakker?

i spoke to my insurance a while back they asked if there was a tracker fitted to a car i was buying, which there wasnt, they only offered me a £20 discount if i had one fitted...no incentive to have one installed and pay the annual fee, unless you want a chance of getting your car back
