for company car tax rules if you have a company car over 15 years old and its CURRENT market value is under 15k then it is taxed on the price when it was new which gives a big tax saving.

so, that means any 1997 car or older will qualify and i'm after a company car that is modern enough to be reliable and used on motorways but old enough to make financial sense.

however, if you choose a car like an xjr 1996 model then that won't really help because the list price was too high.

so, the car needs to be
1. pre 1997 (the more modern up to this date the better)
2. have a low list price when it was initially sold (ie anything under say 6k)
3. have a current market value of less than 15k (the closer to £15k the better)
4. be reliable
5. be reasonably modern
6. nothing 'tatty'

or, as an 'aside' it could be a restored modernised classic

so, i'm thinking things like

original escort but with zetec engine

so, come on chaps, let's see what suggestions you have!

So you are essentially looking for something in the classifieds for under £15k which sold for a sticker price a lot less than £15k when new?
So something which has appreciated in the past 15 years?

Have I got this right?

Think maybe the OP was missing a zero somewhere

BMW 840? Aston DB7?

It must have been fairly high priced in 1996/1997 to still be £15k now.

Surely the closest you're going o get to this is something like an E30 M3

But even then, it's new value would have been 20k +

To get something "tasty" for £15k today that was circa £6k list when new you need to be looking at much older cars I.e. Mid '70's sports cars.... Impact bumper 911, merc SL etc

Op I think you need to give an example to show how it works?

Even a 1980 911sc was circa 18k when new?

If I'm doing this correctly a mk1 escort RS2000 was £1,441 list new in 1973. So if you could buy one for "£14,999" you would pay company car tax at the 1973 figure??

How much would that be?

Trouble is you'd be hard pressed to find a decent one that the seller would let go for less than £15K...Mk1s seem to be fetching (or rather 'asking') quite silly prices these days.

A Mk2 RS2000 would have been under £5k new and should be able to find a good one for under £15k unless it's a known concours car. Not sure how long it would hold it's value if used as a daily driver in all weathers as condition is usually what effects the resale value of these cars. Also you'd be lucky to get much more than mid twenties MPG out of one with the original 4 speed box, so not sure how this might effect the OP?

But it had a sticker price of way more than £15k!

I think the OP needs to wade back in and shed some light on how this works!

Why not get a modern company car and pay modern company car tax? Seriously there can't be any desirable cars that cost less than £15k 15 years ago....

Please show some maths to explain why this makes any sense....
