Need to replace a Civic estate, was a VTi so 170hp?

Got about 2k to spend, has to have 4 seats/decent boot.

Want it to be fun, at least as fast ( or faster) , servicing and maintainence I do not mind/can do, but don't want anything that is poorly built/going to be unreliable!

Also the Civic had an factory-fitted LSD - anything fwd needs to have comparable handling etc.

Use/mileage is light so not too bothered by fuel consumption.

Thanks in advance!

exactly what I was thinking, £2K should get you a very nice late car (1998) with lowish miles and a great spec. If you can live without 4 doors then the 328i Sport Coupe should also be easily achievable

Aside the 328i how about something like an A4 with the 1.8T lump http://www.autotrader.co.uk/classified/advert/2011...

Possibly an A3 as well? Although i think you would probably be better with the BMW...

Saab 9-3 HOT hatchback:

Approx. £2k - check
Four seats - check
Decent boot - check
Fast as your Civic - check
Well built - check
DIY maintenance - check (Haynes is your friend!)
Great handling - well, torque-steer can be fun too!

Here's an example - this is only 3-door but plenty of 5-doors out there too if that's your preference:

By the way, the pixellation problem can be sorted for about 50 quid...

I wouldn't say they handle at all, plus the bulkhead problems.

Some of those aren't exactly great chassis are they. I'd look at

306 Gti-6 (167bhp)
Alfa 147 2.0. (150ish?)
Alfa 156 2.5 V6 (190?)
MG ZS180 (closely related to your old car)
Etc etc...

Yes, a better all rounder for the money doesn't exist. Avoid the smaller engines in the 6 cylinder range, same fuel economy as the biggest ones.
