Going to look at a house next week with a double garage, size quoted 5.33m(17'6'') max. x 5.20m(17'1'') max.

So a 5.20m width. Now I know all garages are going to vary in size slightly, but this seems to me to be a very large single rather than a double? Would I be able to get 2 cars in a 5.20m width garage?

From the pictures it doesn't look very big (doesn't look "double").

Not sure why they were so stingy with the size, as there's more space to the side of the plot, so they could have made the garage much wider (could have fitted a triple I reckon). Not quite sure I could justify demolishing a perfectly (relatively new) garage to build a slightly wider one (though a triple is tempting...)

A normal single door is 7ft wide, so I'd say that would be considered a generous double.

my double garage is 5.4m square, two separate doors not 1 big door, and would hold 2 cars easy if I didn't have a workbench and shelves in one half of it.

The smallest you would want a double garage is 16' 6" so yours should be ok. If anything I would want it a bit longer.

That's 17ft so you've got 3ft more than the width of two single garage doors. That doesn't strike me as particularly generous but not small either.

6x6 is a decent size.
That's fine, but no more than that.

Garages are such a pathetic size in this country. To me if you cant park a car in it and open every door fully then its not big enough.

You need to check if the width measurement is taken wall to wall or pier to pier.

My double garage is 19' square. Having had the X5 in with 3 motorbikes I'd say even that isn't paticularly huge.

5.2m wide? You could fit two XJ220s in side by side and have a 3ft gap between them!

Many thanks for the quick replies. Looks like it's not too bad, some say it's not great, others say it's fine, so sounds middle of the road! Maybe it's just a funny angle on the pic, where it doesn't look very big. A double garage we can fit both cars in is a must, but I guess getting the cars in is one thing, but opening the doors (wide enough to get kids in) is another! I guess the proof is in the viewing to see how big it feels "in the flesh" - I wonder if any viewing has ever involved asking the seller if they mind if we put both cars in to test the fit???!!!!!! They'd think we were wierd... (but, as is the standard these days, the garage is probably full of crap, and we couldn't do it anyway).

We're half-heartedly looking at houses at the moment with a view to moving in a couple of years and the garage and parking is all I look at. It needs to be a double and preferably a big one.

I'll leave the unimportant things like number of bedrooms and whether it has a bathroom to the OH! hehe

You've got the right idea!

Most annoying thing I'm finding is that when using search sites like "Right Move", it doesn't seem to include an option to filter by whether it has a garage or not.

Gives you pretty much every other option besides that!

My major bugbear with RM tbh. Can't believe they don't have a garage option.
