Hello all.

Please help a friend. he's too scared to post his own what car thread so im doing it. He wants a 'interesting' car for around £1000. Preferably a hatchback and needs to fit a mountain bike in it. So no MX5s. Sorry.

This weeks SOTW was an option, anymore?

Replies appreciated.

Volvo 850. My dad has one that he bought two years ago for £975 and it is still going fine. In that time it has needed a thermostat and a set of replacement wheels when a pothole destroyed them. Can't go wrong IMO.

Oooh thats very him. Big and clunky. He's good at fixing stuff so working on it wont be an issue, When he grows a set he might post here, wont you Tom?

He had a Mk5 escort before. Hated it. Unsure he would want another! His 106 has just died, hence the need. he is a petrolhead. Just a poor one smile

For a grand there's loads of stuff available.

He'd get any one of the following:-

Saab 9-3 (cavernous boot) - Turbos are quick and tuneable
Audi A3 (if he hunts around)
Lots of VW golfs around for that money
MG ZT - even in the saloons the seats fold down
Vauxhall Omega - the saloon boot is huge, take the wheels off and the bike will go in.
Old Style VW Scirocco
VW Corrado

There's tons and tons of stuff - he needs to take a look at the classifieds get prepared to start haggling. Worth looking on Ebay as well.

Erm, select £1000 max in Autotrader, select hatchback, select 10 mile radius, hit search.

Then just see what is out there which is local / in good nick / has plenty of ticket / is the colour he wants / etc.

I'm not being flippant; if I had a £1k max budget, I wouldn't allow myself to be too fussy - this is how I would shop as the variant between Brand A and Brand B at this level is far less relevant that condition and history. IMO of course.

Give it a go - you might be surprised at what comes up.

If he wanted one with some go he may be able to find a T5 at that price as well. Those things are fantastic. I wouldn't call them clunky either, the driver ergonomics are spot on and they get down the road better than any brick shaped car has any right to.

The only trouble with the N/A ones is that they are really juicy, averaging 25mpg over a tank would be an achievement and they have very low gearing so they do about 3500 rpm at 70. The T5s are a little less juicy and have higher gearing, but they tend to chew a set of front tyres every 10k and the turbo tends to pop every 80k or so.
