of coure this isnt a joke. some might have known that one should be drastically cheaper than the others. someone might have had more than 1 of these cars and say that 1 of them is particualy expensive.

I don't think that's why that has been said. Surely you'd just whack each one into a quote comparison site and see what comes out cheapest?

been checking some quotes and they all seem to be 1300-1400 quid. i checked an mx5 and that was cheaper at just over a grand. these are still more expensive than id though. i pay a lot less than that for my daily driver (2004 ford fiesta) so maybe it might be chaper if i use multicar insurance....

IMO I wouldnt touch any of the frenchists at that price, only the BMW. I'm looking at spending £2-2.5k on a Ph2 Clio 172 and even then I'm wary of buying an unreliable stbox. Also for some reason Ph2 172's are cheaper to insure than Ph1 172's, for me anyway

Something you need to take note of, you can only apply your no claims discount to one policy, some multi car insurance is only designed for two cars and two drivers / owners so no claims can still be applied to both cars.

Where you live and where you park the cars makes a big difference, as does mileage, named drivers if any, etc etc. I know I would only be paying about £800 for any of these if I were 22. But if your budget for car and insurance is circa £2000, this isn't the market for you, look at a nice older diesel saloon or something to smoke around in and save a few quid up!

if you want cheap insurance chances are you wont be able to get anything too exciting if your young without paying decent money... often RWD doesnt help nor convertibles or coupes diesel saloon or hatch you may have more joy with. 172 would probably be expensive due to the amount of young people that own them and crash them...

Saloons seem cheaper than hatches - especially the boring grandad type. You're after something that doesn't get crashed much so is seen as low risk. Hot hatches get razzed around and binned a lot so you pay a premium for other people's lack of talent.

The older the better.
The less desirable BRAND the better.
The less desirable in general the better.
Engine size and performance makes no difference.
Insurance groupings make very little difference if you're young so long as you avoid Group 20. The difference between Group 1 and Group 19 is only 50-100% or so.
AVOID JAPANESE CARS!

Not as such, and it's certainly not been an unreliable car for me! But I did buy it too early, I was not long 18 and while it's in good shape now, I would have done much better buying a later model in better nick with a different engine. 150bhp for 27mpg really is the dog of the range, but was necessitated by a tight budget and marginally cheaper insurance. If I'd waited a couple of months and scraped together just another £500 to spend, I would have had a much better car for the past two years.

I said the OP might end up broke because, while I haven't, he's being somewhat more ambitious

My point was that if it looks like you're scraping the bottom of the barrel in a particular range, you should wait until you can get a better example. You can buy a £900 car and spend a grand making it lovely, straight and new-looking, and then often find one for sale at £1500 just the same..

well all i would be doing to the car is stripping it, basic brake mods and lowering suspension so it doesnt look embarrasing. maybe i would be better off getting one with all that done hopefully for around 1.5k?
