(mods, I realise this should probably be in the M Power forum, but I was hoping to get a greater base of opinion from none BMW drivers)

Scenario - About £25k to treat myself on a car - not a long term keeper but a good use for some free cash for 12 months. Do about 200 miles a month so fuel consumption / running costs aren't a big factor. Got the girlfriends car to haul 4 people / dog / do the tip runs so back seat space isn't really important. Deprecation is a concern but can live with around £5k in 12 months / 3,000 miles which neither car should do.

It's not intended to be a weekend only car, but a infrequently used every day car.

Both the E63 M6 and E92 M3 now fall into this price bracket. Both are charming in their own ways, though the V10 in the M6 is probably the only reason it's being considered as it's probably one of the last opportunities to own one of the great engines. The E63 would need a warranty.

In the E63 corner you have http://pistonheads.com/classifieds/3386984.htm (with the change used on a warranty)

And in the E92 corner you have http://pistonheads.com/classifieds/3524567.htm

My heart wants the E63, my head wants the E92.

Discuss.

Howdy - I've had both, and they're both great in their own ways. M6 engine is awesome & v quick in a straight line, but M3 is almost as quick & more chuckable, the engine doesn't sound like a diesel at idle, and the gearbox is 10 times better than the M6's.

Nothing you don't know already I'm sure, but M3 gets my vote. HTH.

M3.

M6 always struck me as a bit of a tourer, but the M3 seems like it'd be more fun day to day.

Not that I've ever driven either of them, but meh.

Buy it, then let me have a go.

M6 for me. As you said, in future, such cars may not exist, so get your fill of high revving NA V10 while you can.

Very helpful, thanks.

I think I need to drive them back to back. Last time I drove an M3 I thought "quick, but nothing special" regarding the power, but the rest of the car felt really good. The M5 I've been in felt proper fast. Never been in an M6.

I quite like the SMG in the e46 M3 CSL / M5 / M6, it would be a manual M3 as I don't like how good the DSG boxes are.

Buy the M6 or you'll always wish that you had.

Sooo much car for that money, although not keen on that white wrap TBH, way too pimpy for me.

Probably not the best car of the 2 choices, but so much more interesting and what an engine...

You're probably right - the best option is to run the M6 for 6 months then get in an M3 for the winter.

I think I've managed to blag a back to back drive at a dealer (Specialist cars in Stevenage - top guys!) so that should seal it for me. Will do the M3 first, then see if the M6 feels special enough over the M3 to swing it.

I also own the reg plate "V10 WOO"... would look pretty dumb on a V8 wink

Worth bearing in mind that the M3 V8 really comes into its own as you work it through the rev range. It just seems to accelerate harder and harder past 6k rpm up to the 8.5k redline.

I understand the V10 has similar characteristics, but with a bit more lower end oomph as well.

So make sure you give them both a proper work-out on the test drive.

No worries.

I thought the M3 was a bit unexciting too, when I drove a manual at the time I owned the M6. But try an M3 with the DCT gearbox, it works so well and lets you stay at the right revs all the time. But I can see the argument for having a V10 at some stage in your life too biggrin

Purely because I have only ever seen one on the road my vote goes for the M6.

M6- They go like st off shovel and are stunning (IMO) to look at. I also think you would wonder what the extra 2 cylinders would have been like if you go for the M3.

Lets be honest though you can't go far wrong with either!

Just watched some of the M6 boards races between the 2 cars in question.

That M6 shifts.

Have not owned either of these cars but accompanied a friend on a back to back test drive in 2008 when both were pricing at about 50k.

The m6 made the biggest impression on us - the engine noise and performance was phenomenal. The cabin felt lower slung and the whole thing felt a lot more exotic than the m3 which seemed quite workaday in comparison (if I remember the 6 had extended black leather, carbon trim, logic 7 hifi, hud. We both left in awe of the m6 (rather liked the way the salesman turned out of the dealership and immediately did a 0-130). It probably wasn't the most objective test - I could imagine that the m3s merits would come through with longer exposure and we didn't get to test the handling in a big way - really more straightline hooning. I have not since heard many owners refer to the e92 m3 as workaday...
The issue with the 6 imho is the ownership proposition - fuel bills, costs if it goes wrong etc. Roughly speaking, both cars have followed a similar depreciation pattern and can now be had for mid 20s. Maybe that will be replicated as we go on - The more limited m6 numbers should help the 6 depreciation but as prices fall I think you're getting into ownership brackets that may well be scared off by the proposition. The 3 ownership proposition is prob less intimidating but you'll be competing against quite a lot of others when you come to sell.
Either way I'm sure you'll have a huge smile on your face.

Thanks five50 - I've still not got around to driving these back to back (the dealer sold the e63) however the more I think about it the more I think the M3 is the right car for now, not least because the girlfriend is moving out so I'll be doing more miles than I originally thought :Hehe:
