997 GT3 vs 550 Maranello vs 575 Maranello?
Discussion
Yes, chalk and cheese I know!
I was having a wander through the classified, mostly nosing through the GT3s when I saw found myself looking at Ferrari 575s. With £60,000 buying you a nice example of either a GT3 or a 575 and with excellent 550s at £50,000, what would the average PHer choose and why?
Today, I think I’d go for the 575. I do like the interior update over the 550 (though the steering wheels on any post 60’s Ferrari does leave me a little cold!) which I think looks quite lovely. Couple that with the V12 and it's road presence and I think I’d choose the Ferrari.
Simon Furlongers example of a 550 here
(sold) has an interesting set of wheels on it. Can’t quite decide from these pictures if they bring the car up to date, or if they are a bit rap star
Is the 575 work the extra £10,000 on top of the 550 in the first place? I’ve heard the 550 is actually the better car...
All three sound absolutely epic too!

I'm also in a Ferrari mood today. I can imagine getting much more pleasure from taking the 550/575 on epic road trips, and either would feel more special than the 911 when not hooning. I very much doubt that I would get to exploit the GT3/ take it on track often enough to feel I am getting value from what it offers.
Not sure on the wheels on that one though. They are a bit bling, but I think they suit the car well. Oh, and TDF is the best colour for them

History will be kinder to the 550 than the 575 but good ones are probably harder to find.
As for whether to get one over a GT3 it depends on what you want it for.
10 day tours around Europe - Ferrari
Sunday morning blasts with the odd trackday - GT3
Oh and as for the steering wheels the 1980's Ferrari 400i / 412 had a fantastic Nardi wheel which was a joy to hold

My mechanic works on a few 550s/575s - and he lightly modifies them too.
The 550 is a sure-fire future classic - last all-manual Ferrari with the iconic open-gate box, it sounds
and looks awesome.
The 575 is difficult to find as a manual - I suspect they are being squirreled away by investors. The F1 gearbox dilutes the experience, imho.
Having gone through the agony of deciding which to buy, I had a brutally frank conversation with myself and decided I need more than 2 seats or I simply would never use it. Currently trying to find a Manual 456M or a nice Auto (TdF Blue and Tan leather if possible!).
But, given the difference in price, I'd buy a 550 in a shot if I could deal with the 2 seats issue - there is a good looking one at £50k at Slades Garage, one slightly dearer with Simon F, and a few to avoid at, er, other places.

I saw a 550 the other week and while I haven't been a fan in the past, i did warm to it and ran to the classifieds only to realise it only had 2 seats. I was thinking it would be a good buy in terms of having done all it's depreciating but there you go. I had a look at the 456 but think it looks very dated and the 612 which I don't like and won't stop depreciating I shouldn't think.
The 550's a big car for a two seater, but it's a lovely looking car and not that big in absolute terms.
Would be my choice - Someone on here has/had a lovely red one that I spotted at the New Year's day meet at Phoenix Green last year.
One of the few Ferraris I'd really love to own rather than just have a go in. I could spend my life just looking at the 550
