If you had £1k to spend

What would you get?
Yes this is a very badly concealed "what car" thread.
The MX5 will be gone in the next 6 weeks as I'm now working in London and can't really justify the finance on a car that I'm only really driving every other weekend or so. So I'm looking to get a cheap, reliable runabout whilst I use my hard-earned to save for a house deposit.
Ideally I want a fun petrol car which I won't need to worry about leaving parked on the road in all weathers (Mk1 MX5s therefore aren't in consideration)
Was thinking about a little 1.25 Fiesta as I understand they're fun little steers, but have since realised that 100k Focus' are in this price range as well and I know how good they can be (in comparison to other shopping cars at least).
However I'm looking for inspiration from PH as my brain's lacking at the moment
Cheers in advance

I had a fiesta (crossflow) and my sister in law has a fiesta 1.25 zetec both 1999 models, they are ok and nice little cars to drive, the heaters do have a habit of playing up so find one that works this time of the year.
The real problem with fiestas is rust and the build quality can be a bit iffy.
I think a focus would be a better bet, I personally would go for and old golf, I now drive an 1995 Audi A4 which cost £280 which I got on ebay, and can honestly say I would rather have that over the fiesta as the build quality is miles better and of course you dont have problems with rust.
How about a peugeot 306 they are now dirt cheap and I have had a few over the years and again they are galvanised so no rust problems and always reliable, it was the last of the decent french cars.

Puma's a very good shout but wasn't sure if I could get a decent one in budget - turns out there's more than a few 1.7s at that range which is great!
Weren't there cylinder lining issuer on the Yamaha engine to look out for? The 2/3 buyers guide I've looked at don't mention them but I'm sure I remember hearing about something to do with thin linings?
