Morning all,

Someone ran in to the back of me this morning, low speed and just scratched by rear bumper, however, looking from the side we're greeted with this:

Quiet obviously shifted out of line.

I'm not going to be able to take this to a garage for a while now so see what damage has really been done, so I wondered if any of you guys know what to expect? Any idea of cost to rectify? If the person who ran in to me is willing to settle outside of insurance I'm happy with that, but obviously would depend on cost for them.

Its probably just bent the mounting tabs or has jumped off them. Should be fairly easy to fix, providing you don't take it to a rip-off garage that might suggest replacing the bumper

Judging by the paint colour match it isn't the first time! I'd suggest not going to that garage again...

Thanks for your replies.

As far as I'm aware its original paint, the car hasn't been in an accident before, but it could have been resprayed due to scratches I guess.

In honesty they won't know what the damage is until the bumper skin is removed. Being that the accident wasn't your fault, I wouldn't settle for any repair which will leave the car looking worse than it did before the other car ran into it.
I would take it to an insurance approved workshop for a proper inspection- find out who does free estimates in your area. It looks to be at least £400 worth of work to me, assuming you use a properly accredited and insurance approved garage. A less thorough (but potentially effective) repair would be to get it sprayed in situ and clipped/bolted back on but personally I wouldn't be happy with this for a non fault accident.
Have you satisfied yourself there is no damage to the bootlid? checked the shutlines? checked the light fittings? The Z3 is obviously a low car so depending on what sort of car hit it you could have damage elsewhere which you weren't looking for.

Looks like a 99 reg?
May 2000 build date, W plate facelift 2.8.

I've had a closer poke around and there's no damage to the lights or bumper, it was a Clio that hit me so not particularly large.

I agree I want it to be repaired fully to the standard it was pre-shunt but so any out of insurance repair would be done on my terms. If the other party is awkward about it then insurance claim it will be.

A few more photos for your perusal. It looks like the exhaust took a hit too which I didn't notice before.

Just a little update. I've been quoted £400 to fix it and the 3rd party has agreed to settle outside of insurance. Fingers crossed for a good repair!

Where's the 'smartarse' smiley? this'll do... bowtie

For that price it should look better than it did before with regard to that paint match at least, and with a nice blend into adjacent panels.

Are they replacing the backbox in that quote?

Yep good estimate on the repair cost wink

No they are not replacing the exhaust, they should be able to bend it back easily enough which is fine by me. The exhaust is the original, so 110k miles and 12 years later its not doing too bad! I am expecting to replace in the not too distant future any way.
