the time has come to start the overhaul of the S1 RS turbo. But which way to go. faithful recreation of a original S1(bit boring but timeless classic) Or a 2.1 ZVH modded monster (fun but desecrating a classic)
ether will cost the thick end of 5-9k
leaning towards a classic rebuild as value will hold much better. But will i regret not pushing the envelope and making something i really enjoy ?

Keep original, they're becoming extremely rare in original form, and if done right, would be worth as much or a little more than you paid out for the overhaul.

Hang onto it for a few years in a garage, cleaned and well kept, it'll only appricate in price.

Id go original but internal engine modifications and items that make it more reliable/powerful which cannot be seen.

I'll second this. Plenty of ford classics shot up in price too.

What about 1.9 tall block? Looks completely standard from the outside.

I stuck with the 1.6 bottom end, they can take more punishment that the standard gearbox can.

CVH 1.9's from Ferriday Engineering and keep it classic, but hide the mods.

original.

even with a fk-off massive engine in there it will still be a 80's car with 80's handling and 80's interior. why bother? If you want a big / fast / modern engine buy something different.

I've always had a soft spot for the old Series 1 RS Turbo, they're a lovely looking car in my eyes!

If I was in your position I'd build a Zetec turbo engine for it, but if you want to retain the look of the original cvh engine bay the ZVH, everyone will tell you something different but at the end of the day it's all personal preference really.

Either way come on over to www.passionford.com and start a restoration thread about your car.

Don't bother with ZVH, crap engines IMHO. Either stay original or go for a 2.0 16v Zetec turbo.

Its perfectly possible to reverse any mods if you fo them well, but to be honest RST's are a nightmare above 200Bhp, unless you spend serious money on brakes, suspension & gearbox etc..

I would do the 1.6cvh & run a nice mongoose exhaust, 285 cam and a decent intercooler, then have it running around 180-190bhp. It will sound great, be nice to drive & reliable.

What a odd comment.

Do you always insist that the new car is the better car. Why question the man's intentions, he has made it clear that he wants to restore a modern classic not go and buy a focus or something equally mundane.

Love 80s cars and 80s turbo boost which goes something like nothing, nothing, noises and whoooooosh off it goes, how can you get bored of that?

I love the idea of a ZVH monster but at the same time, S1s are getting rarer and rarer and from a purely objective POV (ie forgetting the awesomeness of a really quick S1 RST and just looking at pound for pound speed) there are other, less rare, less valuable platforms which you could put money into making quick and fun. Restore this, save the beastage for less rare base. IMO of course.

I had an RS Turbo back in the 90s. I think it's the only car I've owned that would of gone up in value if I kept it.
