Private sales - does this sound wrong to you?
Discussion
Looking around for a smoker to throw into the daily grind and found something on AT that looked good and was local. Not really cheap or expensive, just seems a fair start price for a tidy looking car. So I phone for a chat.
Nice sounding guy answers and we chat about the car. Well looked after and folder of paperwork to boot - so far, so good. I then ask if it is his name on the V5 and his address where I can view the car - the answer is no. He is not evasive of defensive, but here's the deal:
The car was p/x with a garage who wouldn't want to retail it due to it's age. So he picked it up from a trader mate with the intention of keeping it. Wife doesn't like it so moving it on. When pressed, he did say he used to work as a dealer and if raising some cash is required, will 'dabble' if he can pick up straight cars through trade friends - quite open about this. I don't really have an issue with this in principle - he is using his profressional contacts to his advantage, as we all do I'm sure and advertising at private sale price rather than dealer.
But here is where I don't like it - the V5 is still in the name of the previous private owner. He says that all the selling part of the document has been filled out and signed by the last owner, but it has not been fully completed and sent off. So that is how the V5 looks, the old owner's name still on it.
I made it clear that this was most unauthodox and he agreed, but said he would happily get the details and phone number of the previous private owner so that I could talk with him directly, chat about the car and agree with him that he has actually sold it.
I've run the checks and the car comes back clean as a whistle - no issues. But obviously there is a big neon sign in my mind flashing "proceed with extreme caution"
What do we think?
