It must be me doing something wrong? confused

1) Saw a car in eBay. (Won't say what) FBMSH, Reasonable miles, good spec. Didn't get any bids at £6K. He relisted a month later starting at £5,5 again no bids. Wasn't in a position to buy at the time but am now. So emailed and asked if he was interested in selling now privately. Came back very quickly. Yes I want a quick sale. Give me a call 07****

Called him and no answer. He calls back.

"You phoned me"
"yes, I emailed about the car"
"I know" (how?)
"I'd be interested to come and look at it tomorrow"
"How much will you give me for it?"
"I dunno, I'd like to see it first, what sort of figure where you thinking though?"
"I've seen them on AT for over £6K" (load of bks only 1 is that money and it's done HALF the mileage. The rest are all under £5K even at traders!) "I won't take less than £5750 under any circumstances I don't NEED to sell it"
"Actually, you know what, I won't waste your time. Cheers anyway"

So 'quick sale' to 'don't need to sell' in half an hour laugh

2) Phone another car. Been advertised for a while. Speak to guy who sounds a bit vague and it's going to need Tax/Mot next month and ask about viewing (sat)
"How about 1?"
"No I'm at work, maybe 3?"
"Ok cool I'll see you at 3 what's your address?"

Rock up 10mins early to see the owner driving off in it. Think Ok, he's taking it round the block it must be crap starting cold. I'll just hang it out when looking to let it cool down. But he's not back after 10 mins. So knock at the door his wife answers it
"Hi I'm here to look at the car but it's not here?"
"Yes my husband needed to pop out quickly, back in couple mins. I'm just feeding the baby Do you want to come in?"
"Nah, I'll wait out here you finish with the baby" (seeing another woman breast feeding is not really a fetish of mine)

20 mins elapses, no return of owner or car. So I text him asking him about rescheduling. No reply. So I leave. Even now 24 hours later, Still no call/text apologising for having to nip out. I only came a short distance so it's no problem but I'd have been pissed to travel miles to be mugged off.

If you want to sell a car surely an element of accomodation is to be expected? hehe Guy who bought my last car was half hour late. But he kept in contact AND paid full whack so I didn't mind. No wonder some cars are for sale for weeks. laugh

Some people are rude, some are stupid, some are decent reasonable people. It's great when you get two of the latter come together on a car deal, but generally you have to deal with several of the former before you get there.

I am selling my mum's car at the minute and have had 50/50 so far - some decent communication and a complete timewaster/dodgy character who I suspect wanted to nick the car!

It's a shame. But as you use the phrases "rock up" and "mugged off" in your post, my sympathies are limited! laugh

That's the crap you have to put up with to buy/sell privately, unfortunately. As harsh as it sounds, I look at the tone and spelling of the advert, and whether the seller’s location looks like a nice place to live in his pictures as a filter and it generally works out better!

Sold the Skyline today. Guy turned up, had a look around, we went for a test drive he paid in cash.

So there was at least one normal transaction today.

Went to a garage once, to look at a 107 for the OH.

Booked a test drive over the phone for 12.30, arrived at 12.30 and he said sorry you can't drive it but you can look at it as I have to go as my wife has cooked me a dinner and I need to go home. I said we have come all this way (about 20 minutes but I was trying to make him feel bad) and you not even going to let us test drive, to which he came back with if you put a deposit down you can.

WTF?!

I told him his business was a joke and strolled off.

Updates. It must be me, after all why would you pay to advertise your car on eBay/Autotrader/PH and then do everything you can to avoid a sale. biggrin

Car 4 - Described as FSH and Mot/Tax for 6 months - turned up to find FSH means a service book with 5 stamps from years ago and a invoice for a screen. Tax & Mot already expired. Turned out it was clocked anyway going from the MOT website. Text me a few times afterwards with a few lower prices. When I asked him about the mileage discepancy, he got the arse and told me the car was sold anyway confused

Car 5 - Trader. Excellent condition means accident damaged nsf wing and scratches/paint damage on EVERY panel. Interior was in good nick though hehe

Car 6 - "Good condition" means ruined dash from a multitude of st phone kits, airbag light on, major rust on arches (clever photography on advert made it look minor) He asked if I was going to make him an offer. I said "no" and walked. He looked stunned laugh

Car 7 - Seller was bloody hard to get hold of. After 5 calls over 2 days (is that too much?) he text me saying he was at work so can't answer (fair enough) did I want to look at the car? I said yes how about tonight? He said, you shouldn't buy a car at night come in daylight. (good advice but my risk surely) OK, I said how about day after tomorrow? (other commitments) he never replied. Tried calling but phone was off for the next few days so gave up. Advert was relisted for 2 weeks further.

Car 8 - eBay. No contact details so emailed a couple questions about the history. No reply. Listing ran out. No bids. (this is very common. Had another trader ignore a question and the car is re-listed every 28 days)

Car 10 - Autotrader. Phone number on advert is wrong. Inspired! Given the price has been slowly dropping over a few weeks. Seller must be sitting at home wondering why he's getting no interest! silly

Even tried a Wanted advert on here. Said wasn't going to travel 100+ miles from my location and wanted a manual. 1st reply was 160 miles away (and surprised when I declined) and had been shill bid on eBay as seller wanted £400 more than it "sold" for rolleyes 2nd reply was an auto. rolleyes

Private buyers are a bit mad also. I may have told this story here before but I sold a car once it was a Hyundai thingmejig it was up for £895 I think and bloke rang me up asking if he could just buy the engine.

Bloke: 'Yeah well mate I was wonderin if I could just buy the engine dyaknowwhaddimean'

Me: 'The engine's tip top mate but i'm not selling it for spares'

Bloke: 'Yeah gotcha gotcha so how much would you sell the engine for on its own?'

Me: '£895'

Bloke: 'But thats what the car is priced at'

Me: 'Buy the car - get the engine.'

Bloke: 'Oh right oh right well errmm I was only wond'rin y'see cos I got the same car but mine needs a new engine.'

Me: 'Fair enough mate, I dont have the facilities by which to sell for spares but I'm not bothered what you do with the car after you've got it, strip it down if you like.'

Bloke: 'Well mate you see mines better than what you've got for sale. Mines got full leather, CD player, climate control, full alloys..'

Me: 'Mine's got an engine.'

There's an engine driven pump spraying petrol onto the candle, to make it burn brighter.

And mad? I was absolutely livid!

All those upgrades are more than the car is up for sale at... Goes to show modifying really does pay.

I don't get the bit about the private plate and the need to put the old one back on as the reason he isn't looking to sell it quickly... Um you can do that in under 30mins from never having done it before and that includes actually changing the physical plates over!!!

I was selling an MX-5 once, a guy came to look at it then declared it was the wrong colour interior. Bit odd I thought as you could clearly see the interior in the picture of the interior with the roof off!

I also recently sold my tatty push bike. Guy won it for a tenner and paid on the day. Took him a week to collect though.
He just didn't seem to understand what I was writing to him.

I'd say "You can collect from my home address, or I can bring it to my office on Sunday only, which is near the train station" (He had asked how far from the station I was)

I'd get no answer, and Sunday would pass two days later.

I'd say "Do you want to collect the bike?"

He'd say "Yes, I can collect from your office on day Wednesday"

"No, I said I could only bring it to my office on Sunday, you'll have to collect from my home address now, I'm free Thurs & Fri after 830pm"

"Okay, I can collect on Thursday at 6pm, whats your address?"

"No, as I said in my last message, I'm only free after 830pm"

I didn't hear from him again until Sunday after I'd messaged him stating that he'd paid for it so can he please come and get it.

Eventually he came at the specified time on Monday evening, luckily I was off shift by then and could be there for 6pm.

I appreciate people can't get to pick something up straight away, but this guy just didn't seem to read what I was writing.
