Hi all. I will soon be needing to replace 3 tyres on my car. (I had to have 1 replaced recently due to damage)

My problem is this. All of the tyres in my price range seem to have an asymmetric tread pattern, whilst my recently purchased one has a conventional tread.

I don't want to buy 3 more like the one on there, as it was over-priced and not a known brand.

So, can I mix the different types of tread, or will it affect the handling?

Thanks

Tim

Not adviseable to (read 'do not') mix tyres on the same axle but you can get away with mixing tyres on different axles. If the car is a real performance wagon then even this is unwise.

Yes you can mix tread
yes it may affect handling
whether you notice it or not will depend on you, your driving style and the type of car.

Bite the bullet and get 4 new ones, and then sell the old one(s?) on Ebay.

How recent is recent?

If I were you I would put the one you have into the boot as a spare, and get four new ones. I bet your spare is out of date anyway.

The spare is an un-used space-saver. The car is a Mondeo that's mainly used for commuting, with the odd motorway trip.

Most of the posts have confirmed what I suspected that they shouldn't be mixed!

Thanks to all who have replied!
