Long time reader first time poster and my 1st post is a kind of what car thread...sorry.

Its time to sell my Elise. This makes me very sad as I have loved the years of ownership I have had with it. But in other news it means I can get a new shiney car. Huzzah!

I have narrowed it down to just 3 cars.

TVR T350C/T
Masseratti 4200GT
and a possibley ruinous high mileage (80K) Aston Martin V8 Vantage.

I discounted eveything else like M3/M5, RS4/RS6, Porsche.

Feel free to offer your opinion.

I've had TVR for about 13 years now. Get the Aston!

What is the budget? I could be the only one here, but i would go for the Maserati from that list.

I would have said the Maserati, without even a thought. One of my favourite cars.

Until I tried the V8V.

It is a proper motor car.

What you want it for exactly? Just weekend fun and the odd one away with the missus or is this a possible daily or or or?

Could probably stretch the budget up to 30K but thats could be stretching a bit to far on those cars.

I am only ever at home during the weekend (IT Contractor and work away from home) hence the cars I am looking at but it could be, at some point, drafted into a daily.

Just thought I would point out, I do not want a M3 or M5 or the Audi RS4 or RS6. Driven most of them and the only one I would seriously consider is the M3 but its not a car that filled with me with excitment. They are nice and quick but just lacked, well something special.

Well, i can only comment on the AMV8 and i'd say if £30k gets you in one, if it's higher mileage, then that would suggest lots of regular maintenance (of course i'd check) and any issues are likely to be resolved so potentially not a bad proposition after all.

Secondly, drive one. Great noise, great presence, great looks. Not as fast as you'd hope, lacks low-down grunt (particularly for a v8) - all torque (on 4.3) arrives top of rev range, so you have to be going pretty quick to have real fun and play silly buggers, which isn't best suited to low speed day-to-day driving. Albeit switch off TC on a damp/wet day and it's much better - was good fun in the snow last year. You do have to work the gearbox (bit notchy when cold, even with oil/link etc changes, but i have no prob with that). Problem being, regardless of that, if you get one you probably won't want to sell it... i toyed with the idea last year, but can't bring myself to do it, instead will have to add alongside this yr.

Good luck.

In the interest of living up to your forum name, I suggest the Aston or possibly the Maserati. But for that price, have you considered an supercharged Jaaag?

Unless the 4200 was the Gransport then everything I've read suggests to steer clear.

In which case it boils down to TVR vs Aston.

Both are achingly pretty. Probably get the Aston just for piece of mind with TVR not being around any longer (Probably not the best reasoning).

Get the Gransport over the 4200. A much better car in all respects.

Granted the TVR is a straight 6 and not a V8. I fail at usernames.

As for the Jag I have toyed with it but for some reason I can't get past the old man aspect of them. I know its irrational but thats how I feel about them. I also can't afford the newer ones which I think shake of this "old man" feel they have.

Don't get the Aston - I did not enjoy my 5 months with mine and it was only 9 months old when I got it - awful reliability and build quality - can't imagine that gets better with age and mileage.....

If a Vantage is in budget, what about a TVR Sagaris? Like a T350 only more so...

If it's a weekend car I'd go for the TVR, probably. I love Astons - the Vantage in particular - but the TVR is just a more visceral experience. And the Maser is a thing of beauty, but it's another step towards the comfortable gentleman's tourer end of the market as opposed to a fixed-head sports car.

If you're looking at everyday use it becomes a much harder choice and perhaps one better suited to the Maser and the Aston. Either way, it's a nice dilemma to have.
