Just wondering, got so used to the integrated stereo in my Saab that I havent remembered to remove the face off bit from the Kenwood thing in my 944, with its fiddly buttons and general air of fiddlyness.

A quick check on Ebay shows that this paragon of automotive audio excellence sells second hand for about £15, is it worth your average toe-rags time and potential capture for stealing one as if they go for £15 on Ebay it just doent seem worth the effort as I am sure the average fence will not be all that interested, I guess there arent that many cars that use a single din stereo any more.

I remember the heady days of the 80's and 90's with all the young chaps sat in the boozer with the whole unit (car stereo that is...) on the table replete with carrying handle, even before the fancy new fce off ones, I remember the brisk trade in stereos removed from repmobiles like Cavaliers and the like. Are the underclass still fascinated with in car audio or do they all now have more recent cars with integrated audio as they have been round ages now.

I did read somewhere on a VW/Audi site that Audi intergrated Sat/Nav stereos were being taken out by the main dealers with cars on the forecourts, as they are very expensive and have a habit of finding there way on ebay.
But saying that I think they dont bother stealing any old tat these days.
I bought a nice basic panasonic stereo for my 16 year old audi the other month on ebay for £11 and that was boxed so I guess it wouldn't be worth the scum stealing old fashioned stereos.

Yep, that is what I was thinking, but seven months ago I thought it was still rife and was keeping mine in a locked metal box usually reserved for firearms, but now you can leave it on the bonnet and nobody will bother with it.

Most bizzarre theft I know of personally was in about 95 I sold my wife's grans old Fiesta Ghia to a neighbours daughter as her first car, she came out one morning and all, and I mean every piece of glass had gone, I remembered looking out and mentally congratulating her on how clean she was keepign the windows biggrin

The Columbus / RNS510 / MFD3 satnavs that VAG stuff uses these days seem quite prone to it, they get "refurbished" in eastern europe including a new (fake) security code card and still make about £500 on ebay. All VAG stuff is very easy to remove too, pop the trim off then four torx screws to undo, no special flat keys needed.

I had nav in my last Civic, but that was a separate stereo, DVD nav unit in the glovebox and a screen integrated into the dash - no way was anyone going to that out in a hurry, nor was there any market for the bits.

We had one nicked from a brand new Golf at Wythenshawe hospital, wife took our son in with really bad croup on the instructions of the GP, I came to pick the car up and leave my snotter in its stead and the door had been pulled back, the dash mullered and the Radio nicked, I cut my hand on the broken glass as had the tosser who nicked it, I got it back 18 months later as we had the serial number and it got put on the the Police computer, said scrote got busted and had a vast amount of car stereos, good at stealing but not a salesman, obviously.

Maybe he was just an enthusiast. I used to have a stack of Ford stereos (all legally acquired!) which I had no real use for.

Funny you should bring this up. Me and a few mates were commenting on how car stereos and alloy wheels dont really try and get sold to us by "mates" in abundance anymore! Back in late 1990's/early 00's I couldn't escape at least 5 people asking me every week if I wanted "lovely alpine face off" , "sub compatible sony hu"....."multispoke alloys", "deep dish" etc etc etc......Guess it just dosn't happen anymore!

Theft still happens the manufacturer units just end up on ebay.

If I can remove the factory nav/audio from a Golf in 5 minutes without causing any damage imagine how quickly I could get one out if I didn't give a fk about cracking a few bits of plastic.

I can't imagine there's as much demand for aftermarket units though due to a combination of better enforcement for untaxed/unlicenced/uninsured drivers meaning the market of scrotes driving old sheds and prepared to buy stolen goods has diminished.

Most thefts from vehicles in my area are for portable sat navs, disabled badges and bags left on show.
