Brighton to Manchester - Best route for rush hour?

As above, departing at approximately 4pm, going to central Manchester. Best route to take and anywhere to particularly avoid? Best to go M40-M6 or M1?
I need to get there as quickly as possible so not worried about twisties.
Any places where camera vans are rife, not that I should worry about it.

t time to be taking that route. Sadly I used to do it often myself albeit a decade ago now.
You'll be fked as soon as you hit handcross hill. I can't think of a better route than that mentioned by others. Take the toll it could cut 30 mins of soul destroying midland motorway jams off your route even at 7ish which is when I reckon you'll get there with a bit of luck.
M1 is going to mean significantly more time spent crawling on the M25.
Or go on a bike and get there an hour earlier.

Seriously? Forget either motorway, they'll be as congested as a year-old tube of toothpaste with the lid left off.
If you must go by car, circle the anticlockwise, take the A1M (which is motorway speed and most of the time motorway size, but few people seem to take it compared with the M1) to Newark, then take the A617 and A619 via Mansfield and Chesterfield, coming onto the A6 just north of Buxton. Then follow that into Manchester.

Having sat for hours trying to get through Hazel grove and Stockport, then Longsight awaits you.....good luck.(Junction 19 M6, M56, Princess Parkway straight into the city centre.)
However, if that's still looking like a problem even at that time, take a left at the Rising Sun, right down Jackson's Lane towards Bramhall til you get to Bramhall Park Roundabout, then left on Bramhall Park Road through Branhall, dogleg right-left and keep going ultil you get to Kingsway, which will take you straight into the centre at a time when everyone else is driving the opposite way.
