Got an itch. Want to chop the Civic. Replacment suggestions
Discussion
Right so, owned the Civic for nearly 2 years now and I have to say, despite the good looks and funky interior design I havent really connected with this car. I got so attached to my old Skoda Superb I shed a tear when I had to sell it, but the Civic... the Civic could be gone tomorrow and I wouldnt miss it.
Nasty sounding engine, terrible interior build quality (and some questionable mechanical parts too)... it just irritates me more than it brings me joy.
But what do I replace it with? There's no finance on the car and I reckon (judging by the wildly varying sale prices on AT) that around £6k might be what its worth (06 plate ES spec 1.8 iVTEC, Cosmic grey, 40k miles and well looked after with FHSH).
Spying an opportunity to pocket a bag or two, I wanna go for something in the £4-5k area. Road tax around the £200's is ok, and I would say 30 MPG combined is probably going to be a limit. There really arent many cars out there that I care for to be honest, can take or leave Audi's (unless its and S or RS) and I cant have another Superb (just yet).
Love the idea of barging it up, but then the prospect of massive bills makes me think twice. Most barges were afterall expensive to begin with.
One car that catches my eye is the E46 Tourings... in 330i or 330d form. I like small estates, they just look better. The petrol should do 30mpg (maybe, I can pretend) and the diesel will definitely do it. Theyre both pretty brisk (well brisk enough for me) and have nice interiors. Does anyone know what I should be looking out for on most likely leggy examples?
Anyone got other suggestions?

we dont do much more than 10k miles a year and its going to be that way for the next two years at least. Hence I was leaning toward petrol motors.
We tend to do a good mix of driving, evenly balanced between Mway slogs and running around short distances. In the Civic I tend to be able to coax out 40-42mpg on a run and during winter at least, town driving without any sort of attention to driving economically we'll be getting very low 30's so it all balances out to a 35mpg average. Which is managable. With a mix like that I would of thought a NA petrol is the best bet for being reliable... less parts to go wrong.
Currently our tax disc costs us £165. I dont mind going up a few groups into the £200's but not willing to pay more than that.
I do like creature comforts though... cruise control and arm rests are always high on my motoring list and Im a sucker for pretty lights so have been trying to find cars fitted with HID's

Did think about these... The VRS has a nice turn of speed. Dont think I can find many with the arm rest mind and seemingly none with cruise. I did however find a 1.8T Laurin & Clement (their special top spec) Octavia hatch within budget. Its a bit farway mind, but it could be worth it. Quite happy to trade 40 hp for heated leather, electric everthing, cruise and HID's.Having said that... I then find myself looking at MK1 superbs again! Barges thread is giving me yet more ideas (E39 5 sereis and E38 7 series have to be best looking cars BMW have ever made)
