4 x Vredestein Sportrac 3 and a copy of Allan Staniforth's book 'Competition Car Suspension'.

Using different makes of tyre front to rear to adjust handling characteristics would not be on my list of modifications.

I would agree with above, you can make surprising changes to feel & balance by playing with the front/rear tyre pressures. Look what other changes you can make to the suspension too in terms of toe, camber etc.

Before spending money on new tyres, go and get a copy of this book . For £12, it's a brilliant read and will help you understand how to modify and adjust your cars handling to your own requirements. Some of the suggestions are no cost options and it may indeed save you a lot of money. If not, it will at least help you make better informed spending decisions.

As posters above have said, there are plenty of avenues to explore before resorting to running different tyres front and rear. How many track cars do you see with differing tread patterns or rubber compounds front and back?
If I were you I'd consider the following;
-Changing driving style
-Reducing front anti-roll stiffness
-Increasing rear anti-roll stiffness
-Reducing front ride height
-Increasing rear ride height
-Adjusting tyre pressures to compensate (road only)
-Reducing front toe-in
-Introducing rear toe-out
etc etc...
