I'm surprised it's only just happened now. I know very few people who've bought new petrol powered cars in the last five years.

Because they (car makers, esp european ones) have tinkered, complicated, over developed diesel engines so much that it meets all regulations set by the EU, thus more attractive as a company car, and then the hype machine goes into overdrive saying there is no alternative to the general public.

The majority of people do not need diesel in their lives, they just think they do.

It's not just an increase in fleet sales/repmobiles neither.

Janet and John decide to buy a second car for her to take their two offspring to school, doing about 6k miles per year in the process. Result = Picasso diesel.

Cecil and Betty, the old couple who live in that big house at the head of the cul-de-sac, decide to trade in their mint, 60k miles, 1992 Jaguar XJ, which they've had since new, averaging 3k miles per year. Result = 2012 Jaguar XF 3.0d

Beccy, student fox and part time shop assistant, decides to get a brand new 'trendy' car on 5 years low rate finance. She plans to travel the 5 miles to Uni every day in it, as well as the 3 miles to work on a Sat/Sun. Result = 2012 Nissan Juke 1.5dci (in white) rolleyes

Dave, a builder, needs a 'flash' car to get about in at weekends / holidays, and to impress his mates at the golf club. He uses the work's Shogun during the week, so doesn't expect to do more than 7-8k per year. Result = Brand new Audi A5 TDI S-Line (in gunmetalstormcloudhurricanetempest ie grey)

Keep buying your DERVs, people, keep buying your DERVs.

Hardly a surprise, I would have a diesel over any of the little gutless petrol engines in a daily/run of the mill car.

Question?

So if everyone switches to diesel does that mean that petrol will be produced above the level demand, as its part of the same production process that makes diesel (tell me if I am wrong) and us petrol heads in a few years down the line get cheaper fuel ?

It's mostly marketing... For people doing relatively short journeys in small cars, then petrol would make more sense, however the eco PR machine and marketing says diesels better...

Only recently gone diesel myself cos I'm doing 17k+ miles a year..

Watch the price of Diesel going up faster than petrol they are in now they will have to suffer for years this is how tax works.

It's been quite a long time since they've had different tax rates. I think they'd have to have a good reason for pushing them into different tax classes rather than just shoving up the tax on both.

Err yeah, that's it smile Go on, buy a diesel, help the price down, you know it makes sense.

Right, there's another one off the petrol, Carfiend. At this rate I might allow you some of my petrols, but I'm not promising anything mind.
