Boring - buts what's is the best mpv

Need to get one of these so it absorbs kids and a dog. Needs to have a big boot but don't really need a 7 seater.

Thinking altea xl, c-max (s-max too expensive)

Have about 7-8k to spend and I need 5 years out of it.

If you're thinking Altea XL, check out the Altea Freetrack, it's the same as the XL but with 4WD and good spec. Power wise the diesel is 170, petrol is 200.

No one has a clue what it is, so prices are bargainous.

Freetrack sounds interesting, they must be fairly scarce???

Touran looks good but only in sport trim.

I saw a 1.8t altea xl, are these the same lumps as the old mk4 golfs and leon cupras? They were strong reliable engines if I remember right?

We bought a Grand Picasso for £8000 and love it. Not set a foot wrong yet, although I would avoid the automatics and the Diesels have the regular DPF issues.

We had a Scenic. It was well laid out and very practical.

If had been built better, I'd probably still have it on the fleet.

If you don't need seven seats, why an MPV rather than an estate car? Something like a Mondeo estate is pretty huge if you don't need the extra seats and will probably drive better than any of the MPVs.

Checkout the honda frv.

We have just got one, 6 seats (that dont use up all the boot space and can seat adults.)

7-8k will get you a nice diesel or a mint petrol on an 07-08 plate.

Also ive seen dog gaurds for sale for these.

Mazda 5 sits on the same chassis as a C-Max (Ford C1 platform) but adds sliding rear doors which are a real bonus with small kids.

Wife loves hers with the 2.0 petrol

I too didnt understand why not an estate initially.... However after a while of owning an estate and then having a chance to borrow an Altea XL we soon learnt it is alot easier to get the little ones in and out of the car. Plus MPV cars appear to be alot cheaper, have lower miles and are newer than some of the main stream estate cars.

Plus the new family fun bus means i can trade in my 3 series touring and get a coupe (or similay) which is just for me me me

The sliding doors make loading kids easy, without the worry of whether you're just about to ding the car parked next to you in he car park

I have a 7 seat Scenic and in the two years I've had it it hasn't put a foot wrong. Pretty good in juice (40mpg round town, more on A Roads / Motorways). Very comfy, smooth ride, lots of toys (panoramic sunroof, keyless entry/start, half leather etc) - really can't fault the car.

Just look for an MPV that hasn't been a school run mum car (as a lot of MPV's have). Don't be tempted by low mileage - could be a sign that it's been on a lot of very short journeys which won't help the engine and exhaust.

The Zafira is ok, not great, not terrible (save for the 1.9cdti engines that are prone to trouble). The Touran is okay but a little van like and the interior is as bland and dull as it gets.

With that sort of budget I'd personaly look for a facelift (2006 onwards) Espace 2.0dci. The early ones had terrible reliability and got appalling ratings. The 2006 onwards models are much improved and are a lovely place to be and drive pretty well, are very comfortable, well equipped, spacious and not bad to drive for what they are.

Now watch a bunch of haters come along and tell us how st Renault are because they used to drive a 12 year old clio and its exhaust fell off.

There's an R63 AMG 4matic in the appartment block next to mine.
Don't know anything about MPV's, but based on the noise that one makes it is a million times better than any other
