Forgot To Update V5 Registration Document!

My car's gone back to the finance company who it was financed with last week and has since been sent off to auction by them.
When the car was collected they never left me any part of the V5C and to be honest I forgot all about it until a couple of days ago. I've contacts the finance company and left a message but they've not got back to me .
Would it be worth sending a letter to DVLA stating that I'm no longer the owner of the vehicle and telling them the date the car was taken etc. Is there anything else I should do about it?
