Maybe 40mpg, tops, I would have thought based on my experience of small engined, small cars.
Have to agree, they are not really built for MPG figures these small cars. My H reg 1.1 Fiesta used to average high 20's to 30ish mpg, and there was nothing wrong with it. Loads of town driving. On a long run 40 mpg at best and you had to shout to be able to be heard at 70+. My current car is doing 38-40 mpg at 70 and I can have a quiet conversation.bull996 said:
Hmm. Not great then.
What would you recommend, up to £1k then for her, that will do really good MPG?
I would have said this Peugeot 306 HDI - but I've just bought it. I've put a pair of tyres and a new MOT on it and still have a little change from 1K.What would you recommend, up to £1k then for her, that will do really good MPG?

Flaky electrics but great to drive with a current best of 67mpg on a long run. 70+mpg is in sight if I drove a bit slower.

p.s 40mpg is great for a 10 year old petrol engine, IMO.
1987 Micra 1.0 47mpg
1986 Starlet 1.2 46 mpg
Austin Metro 1.0 50mpg ( the Metro engine mega ancient)
Montego 2.0HL 34mpg
Jag v12 owners all claim 18 mpg town
- so a modern v12 today is no better than a engine that was designed 40 years ago
99% of owners of very old cars are claiming mpg that modern hi -tech engines would struggle to match - so in over 25 years i 'm struggling to understand what mpg progress has been made

I have an '02 1.2 Corsa, I get 38-46mpg depending on time of year, weight of foot, distance of journey.
I got my best mpg (46) when I went on holiday to Wales, oddly. I was giving the car some stick (from the turn off of the A44 down to Llandovery, mainly. Through Bulith Wells. Lovely road.) because it's the one time the car's ever felt alive. This is with my (at the time) heavy father (he's gone on a diet since) and a few suitcases) and so on.
As soon as the weight of the passengers exceeds 25 stone though you're knackered and won't go up a speedbump without a tow. For pete's sake, avoid getting one!

You would think 40 mpg /10 year old petrol engine is great but inexplicably i have seen owners claiming

the easiest test is stand behind one of those older cars and smell the air, something modern cars don't.1987 Micra 1.0 47mpg

Denial over fuel consumption is an important aspect of owning a V12 Jag. There's no way they do 18mpg in town; on a long run you might see 18 to 20 if you're careful. The onboard trip computer is a little optimistic in that respect; mine tells me I've averaged 22mpg
