I appreciate in this class of car there are some good contenders, foucs ST, Golf GTI, BMW 335i etc

but....

All of the above have failed on fitting the strict criteria: large boot for large buggy, big rear space for child seat and two other people and generaly not too expensive to get into (buying that is).

The Vauxhall Vectra VXR seems to fit the bill on all angles, has anyone got any good experiences with these and in terms of running costs what are we expecting, i.e. really expensive to run or just as expected for a car like this?

I know Jeremy clarkson didnt really like this car but were not intending on driving it to the its limits, just something modern, comfortable, fast and generally easy to get on with.

Sort of agree but...

We have been to all the above and driven all of them and had a good look round, none of them could fit the child seat and all the buggy stuff in the boot comfortably or if it did fit, not much room left for anything else.

we even looked at the Lexus IS250 but the boot is tiny on that.

I'd have thought the 335i would be much older/higher mileage for the money. Not sure about the rest though, have you looked at a Mazda 6 MPS?

Just go and drive one. A lot of people knock the Vectra for being a crap rep mobile and that's it but it really does have more to offer than that. As a family car goes it's great, massive boot, plenty of room for passengers and a good level of equipment too. There was a big hoo har over Top Gear messing with the cars electrics on the review, there was speculation they pulled the fuse for the suspension system so it flopped about everywhere. The exact opposite of what Evo are saying in their review. I owned a Vectra for a year or so and despite being the older 2.2 DTi engine and having covered well over 200,000 miles (it had been clocked twice) nothing rattled, it felt tight and was still perfectly composed being thrown round corners on the standard SRi suspension. I'd only expect great things from the VXR. Depending on the age you may end up with more power too. Later ones came with 280bhp.

yep, liked the 330i but it was a little over our budget. generally the main thing that attracts me to the VXR is the amount of car you get for your money.

I fancy the estate but the other half doesnt want to have one, thats changing but at the moment we both agree on the VXR which is a first.

Going to see one in somerset next week and if its good I think we will go for it. Silver with the Sat Nav and leather Recaros etc looks stunning.

cheers bud, looking around the 06/56 age, is that the higher horsepower or lower?

Had had a Vectra C before, good car and nothing to complain about.

Yes, but the VXR again seems a little more fun than the Mondeo, good car though.

around that age will be 255bhp but they will map up to 280bhp if not higher with no trouble at all.

2.5T MK4 Mondeo? Might be pricier though

Thinking about it, if you want a bit of a mental Vectra VXR, Midpoint Garage are selling their VXR demo car. It's knocking out well over 350bhp and was Ian's (the guy that owns the place) personal car. I'm not sure how much it's up for but might not do any harm giving them a ring if you're interested.

Might be worth considering a Saab 9-3 Sportwagon, You can get this with the same 2.8 engine. Interior is much nicer than the equivalent Vectra and the handling is improved as well
