Inevitably the new rules will come with an increase in the price of an MOT, any regulation/indication of what that will be, or can garages charge whatever they like?

Garages can charge up to a maximun of £56 for class 4 vehicles. The prices are not going to go up the new rules don't really make on mot any longer.

Since the new rules not a lot has changed for me working at a garage that does mot's. Of the new rules of what is a fail it's only really split ball joint covers that iv'e had to do.

Worst part currently is it's a 2 stage upgrade.

eg Airbag light will become a RFR in March. But currently it's meant to be an advisory. So why not just do the changes in March then?

I think it's for the mot station to get used to the new system so instead of aload of new reason to fail a car on it gives the tester a bit of time to get used to it.

But there are some really stupid reason for a fail one example you can now fail a fuel pipe for being execssivly damaged but not corroded shouldn't both be a fail.

Be intresting to see what effects the new rules has on failers i don't think it will make a huge difference. But will certainly see more peugoet fail on airbag lights on everyone ive been in has it on.

What are ypou guys paying for an MOT these days? Seem to be available from £25 upwards if you shop around. Can't help wondering whether the rate of fails varies with the price though. Having said that, you'd think a big computer somewhere in the sky would soon spot dodgy testing stations.

I know what you mean. But No. Not IMO. As ever with the MOT the phrase is Excessively. Escessive damage would be to the point of failure. i.e. Split. Corroded could be surface corrosion. Or even rusted to the point it would be a st to take of. But so long as it's not pissign fuel out. It may well be happy on that car forever.

Of course you can always ADVISE anything you like on a MOT.

£30 is the going rate for MOT around these parts (although VW main dealer had a £20 deal on)

You make it sound so sordid. Every commercial garage that does MOTs hopes to get the rectification work afterwards. I would say (having seen both at first hand) that a Dealer is less likely to fail a car more easily than a small independent. Dealer failure rates are "generally" lower than indies because the cars they see are newer as a rule.

I always get the dealer to do the 1st MOT, figuring out that most thing will be covered by warranty. Amazingly they always pass.

Made a mistake with daughter's SEAT and got the dealer to MOT it at 4yrs. Failed on completely impoosible to prove stuff - brakes (on a fully main dealer serviced car, yet they weren't embarrassed by this) and suspension bushes. Eventually SEAT paid.

My Merc was on a brilliant MB service & maint plan (they don't do it anymore as it was costing them a fortune) and the dealer sucked their teeth about the state of the disks. I said "change them then" and they wet themselves when they realised that MB wouldn't authorise it as the tester hadn't actually failed the car.

Mostly I use the village garage now - he charges full price but I see it as supporting a local business. I can walk there and back and he'll do little repairs / adjustments at no extra charge.

An oft-overlooked but very useful aspect of car ownership! It really is an utter pain when the nearest dealer is 20 miles away.

Are these MOT rates current, £20/£30? I have to pay £60 in London.

Anyone know any reasonable rated stations in London?

Do you actually pay £60? Because it is not legal for any testing station to charge you that much.

I've never paid more than £40, and that was a bit of an error, my last few have been around £30. Last I checked, you could even get it for £35 at a Halfords Autocentre.

I used to work at a Mercedes delaer with Doug, the guy that runs it. He does car MOT's for either £25 or £30, can't remember which!

I do indeed, £50 minimum if im lucky. I need 2 tickets for both my cars, so Halfords will do.

Thanks

It's free at Audi if you've had a service in the past 12 months.

I've taken our A4 to them for the past two MOTs and had no issues or no advisories. The extra cost of a service still makes it worthwhile.

I never pay more than £30 for an MOT. Last one was £27.50. Seems a bit of a waste of money to pay any more?

I use my local Halfords autocentre. They seem to have a permanent half price deal on c£27. Of the last 4 visits the only extra charges were headlight alignment on one car and new bulb on another (which I struggled to fit myself).
