Hello all,

I have a car that is a non runner, I have had to keep it taxed and insured so that I can use a family members car using my 3rd party entitlement.

I have reached the stage where it is being sold and I wonder wether or not i can continue to pay the insurance even though i am not the owner???

I hope this makes sense.

Its not possible to insure something that you dont own, so the policy on your car would be invalid should you ever have to claim on it, plus a double entry onto MID could raise questions so the two policies could already be flagged as one being possibly invalid.

Ahhh, I was under the impression that you did not need to be the owner.

The only thing that I thought would be an issue is the duplicate policies. I assumed that the new owner will be keeping the car in storage/private land therefore would have no need to insure it.

Any ideas?

I doubt you'll find an insurer who will insure you if you aren't the registered keeper of the car.

Would it not be better to cancel the insurance on your soon to be sold car. (When Sold)

Ask your family member to find out the additional cost to add you to their policy and for you to pay the difference.

This might give you some cover until you buy and insure your replacement car.

You don't have an insurable interest as I see it. Once sold, it's not your car, nor do you have access to it, etc.

I think you would create yourself a world of pain if you tried this, probably resulting in the insurer cancelling the policy (at best).

+1 This would be my advice on the matter also.

Some insurance companies can insure you if you don't own the car and not the registered keeper....but in this case you wouldn't even have any access to the vehicle and I assume it wouldn't be kept at your address, so what would be the point in it still being insured? When you went through your insurance quote you would have probably been asked 'How often do you use your vehicle'? So unless you have advised them you are not using it as it is a non-runner.... your policy may need adjusting. And as another comment advised- this could cause difficulty and may result in cancellation as the insurer would have no insurable risk.

Why don't you ask your insurance company?

The car which is for sale is already insured by myself, It is considerably cheaper for this policy than it is to add me as a named driver on my mothers car (206 sw 1.4). I do not understand why this is, but this is the reality.

Hypothetically if i did not disclose the fact that i had sold the car could they find this out? Remembering it wont have 2 policies?

Insurance companies share data to spot and minimise fraud. I'm not suggesting you are trying to be fraudulent, just that you might get picked up by such a process.

As I understand it, if you sell the car, the new owner will need to insure it, even if it is SORNd. If you keep on insuring it as well, and it all goes wrong, you will need to prove to the insurance company that you are right, not the other way around.

How will you know if the buyer of your car scraps it? Or it gets written off?

Forgive me for asking, but you've highighted that it is much more expensive to get added as a named driver on a 1.4 206.

Are you a young driver trying to exercise a 2nd policy "drive other car" as a "loophole" to use your mums car?

There is no requirement for a SORN car to be insured. Mine isn't.

I am not trying to be fraudulent, just in a st situation.

Current car is a Mondeo 2.0 and its much cheaper than the 206.

I am 25 years of age, nearly 26 does this help me with anything?

Im only looking to use my mothers car as a stop gap until i have enough cash saved to buy a new motor, roughly 3 or 4 weeks.

I appreciate that what i am asking is not morally right, I just need to know where i would stand should i try chancing my luck?

If you don't tell the insurance company that you have sold the car you are definitely not insured (just like any other change of circumstance). If you do tell them and they're happy with it you're fine. I suspect they'll tell you you have to cancel the policy if you do inform them that you've sold the car, though.

You could have an accident in your mothers car....have invalid insurance.....have to pay for your mother car to be fixed....the car that you crash into and get charged with insurance fraud.....then YOU WILL be in a st place with your insurance going through the roof...with an INS20 on your licence.

don't risk it get a short term policy for your mothers motor. and drive with no worries.
