Afternoon!

I am looking to start attending a few track days and dont want to expose anything in my current stable to the wear and tear (abuse) associated with track days.

So was looking for roeccomendations for a "Nutter Wagon" (i think i got the PH lingo correct??)

what would you reccomend?

So far i have been looking at:

-Impreza STI WRX 06/07
-Escourt RS Cosworth (a little ropey in my price range)
-Westfield (the safety issues scare me a little)

Cheers,

P

Depends on how much you want to spend on consumables and maintenance. The Westfield would by far be my choice as a track only car. Are you driving the car there or trailering?

You could also included Elise in there as mine was very cheap to track and more practical than a westfield.

Only an issue if you intend to crash... smile

It depends what you want to use it for, but if it's just for weekends and evenings then a Seven is hard to beat. The only thing is it takes real commitment to use them regularly, even occasional weekends away will be easier in a more practical sports car.

So, yeah, Caterfield gets my vote for adrenaline, maybe a TVR if you want something slightly more usable.

Could realistically afford £3k/year for my weekend/track toy maintainence

Really the best are Westfields / kitcars.

Best to buy a track modified one with a full cage if you're worried.

Scoobies etc are a but dull on track really - everyone knows what you've got and the fuel / tyres / brakes get expensive.

You could buy a 260bhp MX5 for circa £5k that well driven would be faster and its great fun humiliating "superior" cars. Far cheaper to maintain too.

Best to search for "race" or "track" on here / Ebay etc and see what comes up.

I nearly bought a track prepped 944 Turbo with full cage and 350bhp for £6k last year.

Looks like some SERIOUS fun, however I would ideally like it to be road legal

Would suspect the scooby and Cossie would be pretty boring on track. Fast but boring.

You dont need the fastest thing out there, you need the car that takes the most skill to exploit, and gives the best rewards when driven well.

Like that bike-engined Fiat 126 on the front page?

This Fiesta looks fairly well sorted, the £7k left over will buy a lot of trackdays or just another car if you wreck this one:

VX220 Turbo prices are sinking closer to N/A prices.

Probably be able to pick up a Supercharged 2.2 for around £10k too. Incredible when the sun is out too.

I at first didn't think it would be nutty enought but what you've listed is tame compared to them (westy is pretty nutty actually).

I was in the same situation and bought a Westfield. I considered a tweaked production car but approach even low powered Westfield performance you need substantial modifications and the resulting tyre and brake wear put me off on cost grounds.

Also the kit cars are in my opinion much more fun to drive. As for not being practical I used mine for a tip run last week, with ratchet straps it is amazing how much stuff you can attach to roll bar wink

Not that experienced int hese matters but I know a guy who took me round in his track MX5 and it was great fun, he said he did track a Scoob but it wasnt as fun as the MX5 despite being a lot more pwoerful and it was hideously expsnive to track, stuff broke, it ate tyres and did 5 mpg. I blagged a passenger lap in a Mitsubishi evo but from a passengers POV I preffered being in the MX5. The state of the tyres on the Mitsubishi after a day on track was shocking, apparently they were two months old and survived two track days, well survived one (less laps) and were utterly ruined on the second, so whats that, six hundred quids worth, it was fast but felt big and sloppy in comparison to the MX5 which was stripped out, caged, on race suspension and some semi slicks which apparently would last ages due to the relative weight/power, plus he had a skip full of the things he got cheap.

Think as well, I saw a lot of nice metal with drivers to worried about bending it or ending up going too fast, or breaking it, this MX5 got death all day and aside from an oil top up it took it in its stride, and if you break it, its £200 on Ebay to get another engine.

Surly an elise or VX is the most obvious choice? If you have a sunny weekend with no trackdays booked you could just nip out for a hoon in the countryside.

My Elis is incredibly light on it's tyres. comapred to the Evos i've seen on a track day, as has been said above, they destroy their tyres on a track. Literally tore blocks or tread off.

10k would by a very nice Chim and leave lots of cash to make it tracky too smile you also get the benefit of road legal and useable off the track.

I took my caterham to trackdays and the 4wd turbo nutter wagons would use a set of brake pads, eat a set of tyres, drink many many gallons of v-power, overheat, blow up and still be slower in the twisty bits

The biggest expense i had was when i hit a cone and had to replace the wing at 120pounds other then that it cost washers to run

The Elise is arguably a better all-rounder, but a Seven is a more visceral driving experience (a bit like a four wheeled motorcycle), quicker per £ and more playful if you have hooligan tendencies.

For a Sunday afternoon blast I'd take a Seven of some description and for £10k, a well-specced Westfield is one of the best of the bunch.
