This is about as opposite of pistonhead as you can get, but being a 27 yo, with 4 years ncb, recently made redundant, im going to have to pay for a motor myself.

I was suprised that getting a quote on a 1.0 polo was almost £400! Has anybody got any tips on a car that might carry a reduced insurance figure with at least an ounce of reliability? The car itself must also be a cheap-un!

Aygo, C1, 107 are all very cheap, as is the Fiat Panda. In the insurance group 1 spec they're so basic that there's literally nothing on them to break.

Something you can insure as a classic would be cheapest. No tax if you get something old enough, too. smile

I thought about that, but with age comes (reduced) reliability.

E36's and mk1 MX5's are about all I can think of that fit into the 'classic' car insurance band. Have I missed any?

Something like a mk1 or even a mk2 Golf would probably be doable?

My Clio is on a classic policy, so maybe look at them? £300 p/a and once the car is 20 years old it will only be £173 p/a

I just got 262 quid on a Porsche 944 Cab, classic policy with 3 points and one minor metallic indescretion.

I know its not answering your question, but have you tried these things

1) insuring mum, dad or other older responsible adult on car as named driver
2) reducing mileage
3) keep car overnight on drive instead of garage
4) increasing xs
5) insuring fully comp rather than tpft

Amazing, as discussed many times on here, but can save £100 s in price.

You need to pick a car that your normal demographic would not choose. I suggest many people in your demographic would choose ( and crash a polo). Similarly with mx5s, aygos etc. an old volvo barge may fit your criteria....

As our youth only recently passed his test we looked at many options.

Pick an unpopular car with young folk.

Vauxhall Vectra was cheaper than a Corsa for instance. Try something similar.

Do not use mum / dad / older person as main driver this is illegal.

Adding mum / dad / older person / partner as named driver though strangely lowers the price.
Left my ex insured on my car, saved me ££s very odd but true. Also fully comp is often cheaper than 3rd party.

Of course they're reliable.
