Why oh why. smash

http://www.autotrader.co.uk/articles/2012/01/cars/...

If they can squeeze this much BHP out of a 1.0 litre in quite a large car then what is the need to ever buy a 1.6 or 1.8. When i first seen the title i thaught how slow will that be as my 1.6 FOCUS has the acceleration of a tractor. How is it any different to the environment wouldnt it need to be driven hard with such a small engine? I mean the 1.2 Fiesta's are slow as anything and there alot smaller and lighter.

Were all going to be driving around in ribbish 1.0 eco boost shed's in about 10 years time. sleep

I used to drive a 1.6 petrol Zetec Focus with 99bhp which did low 30's mpg. Surely I'd have loved this engine in that car.

What are you talking about? Its brilliant. 123bhp from a 1 litre petrol engine is great. Better economy than the 1.6, less Diesels out there. Not everyone wants a blazing fire rocket all the time.

Hopeless... The focus isnt a large car, but every car i have driven with a motor that small has been a heap of wheezing crap

Technologies of scale.

I think this engine is amazing. Even if it only gets to 90% of its alleged economy, it's still impressive. Combine it with a lightweight car and it'll become even more impressive. Surely someone's already thinking that this mightn't be such a bad idea in an Elise?

Well yes, but they didn't have 123bhp, did they.

This'll sound better than an I4, go acceptably well, return excellent figures, and probably handle very well.

For a nornal hatchback, what's not to like?

Someone has to go stick this engine in an updated lightweight version of the old Suzuki Cappuccino.. It would sell like hot cakes...

I expect we'll be seeing more and more small petrol engines in the next few years.

The days of 2 litre + petrols seem to be more or less numbered in a lot of vehicles. Blame the EU and the ridiculous CO2 targets and fines frown

guess you have never driven an older 1 litre, 3 cylinder, 12 valve, twin cam master piece then? 0-60 in 7.7, not bad for "a heap of wheezing crap"

I used to drool over all the Escort SI's and RS's, Sierra Cosworths etc because they were exciting and looked tough and super fast.Whats are kids going to be drooling over in 10 years time?? a fking 1 litre eco boost ting engine on a slow cars that make no noise and create zero excitement.
The Focus RS...

Whilst you were drooling over Escorts and Sierras, you were aware that they were almost exclusively very slow, weren't you.

Normal cars from normal manufacturers have never been faster.

Looks like a very good bit of engineering to me, it's all about emissions these days.

I would love to see one of those small 1litre eco-boost engines in an older car. such as a mk1 fiesta. or old escort.

How much would the engine cost? Would seem like a nicer thing to lump it in an old ford then buy a new one!

Smaller swept capacity, should equal better efficiency in burn, so not sure what the issue is. Smaller cc engines can offer treats but I think people assume a smaller CC is therefore inferior when really the whole drive train should be assessed in the package.

People that would buy a 1.6 now buy a 1.0 litre and the fueling/burn technology moves upstream, seems all good news to me.

Are there any longevity issues with these tiny turbo charged engines?

I much prefer old cars to new, but a Focus RS would murder the old Cosworths. Just as this new 1.0 will murder any 1.0, 1.4, 1.6, 2.0 old Ford on all objective measures.

The old ones look better, but that's it.

I feel exactly the opposite

Stick this in something that is well under a ton with zero frills and you have a lotus elise or an eco car
