Hi, hope this is the right section.

I'm 24 and have been looking for temporary insurance for up to a week so my mate can buy a 97 MR2 (he's got a provisional) and I can drive it home for him. Problem is, my current insurers won't cover me on it as a 2nd car as I won't be the registered owner, and short term insurance doesn't cover me as I set the vehicle owner as 'other'.

Anyone know of another way around this so I can drive it home. I want to do him a favor, and drive the mr2 as I came close to buying one a while back but decided against it.

Thanks!

Can't help with the insurance but why is he buying an MR2 if he only has a provisional? I can't see that being cheap to insure as a 1st car.

Unless I'm missing something.....

Insure it in your mates name, then add you as a named driver on his policy

He's 24 too and checked it out, when he passes his insurance is affordable.

I have said that, waiting on him to get back to me on that one. He has his test in a couple of weeks so just wants to pick the car up before it sells (looks like a good'n). This way he would avoid getting provisional insurance that's all.

It could possibly be even cheaper for him to insure it as a provisional than when he passes his test. Get him to have a check, and ask for quotes before test and the price after passing... I've heard of many who's premiums jump up quite a lot after no longer being a provisional.

Get it picked up on a flatbed, you won't be able to drive and it might cost a bit but it'll get it to his home address at least.

No other ways of doing it.

Either-

flat bed option.

he owns it and has insurance in his name (provisional prob cheaper) and somebody with appropriate experience etc. Sits with him and brings it back avoiding motorways etc.

He owns it and has insurance in his name and somebody else drives it back, either by being a named driver on his policy or has 3rd party cover on other cars on his own.

Wow! Not a bad first car and I'm surprised he can insure it smile

Can you not insure it through someone like dayinsure?

I had to do similar once when I needed to get temporary insurance on a car that I couldn't get additional cover on through my current policy.

I did it on the basis of being interested in buying the car privately and wanted to take it on a test drive. So I just took out a normal policy in my name - but v. important - make sure you're clear on the cancellation terms of the policy.

After 24 hours (which was all I needed), I phoned them up and then cancelled the policy. IIRC their cancellation terms meant I should have paid 25 quid or something. I guess you might have to hunt round to find a policy that doesn't murder you financially if you cancel it these days - depending on how long you need the cover for.

Oh, and I suggest talking to a broker over the phone or face to face rather than a website.

In every thread I've read on here recently regarding insuring new drivers, it has been cheaper to insure on a provisional license by some margin.

Thanks for the replies, I had real trouble finding insurance even if I buy the car, but I found 1 company that will cover me for a day.

Does anyone have any thoughts or see problems if I buy the car and insure it for the day I pick it up? I will then sell it to my mate the following day.

I know this sounds kinda crazy but I don't see it as too much skin off my back, it's just that the DVLA will take some time to process the forms that's all. And before anyone mentions, my mate is trustworthy :>
