I was having a conversation with a friend the other day about life (etc.), then came that famous line: I do not want material things.

Well, I do! Does he think he is ‘a better person’ than me just because I would like a decent car, bike or house?

I’m not saying that I would want these things over my families or friends health so what does he mean?

Why do people have such a problem with individuals who want material objects such as a sports car?

Thoughts please,

I'm not really into material things. Except cars. Cars are far more interesting to me and useful than expensive watches, clothes, gadgets etc..

I don't own any amazing cars, because I can't afford them. I have a massive list of cars I would buy if I had the money. I wouldn't buy a rolex though. A women at work, spent the same amout I spent on my E30 on a handbag.

What ever makes you happy.

Nowt wrong with material things. Cars, a very loud hifi, and a sweet barbeque are all very beneficial to any summer weekend...

There is nothing wrong with wanting material things. As long as your family/health does not suffer to obtain them.

Couldn't have put it better myself. What's wrong with having aspirations?

Would you be a "better person" if you spent your "sports car fund" on a worthy charity?

I don't think there's anything wrong with buying yourself thing if you want to. I used to laugh at people when I was growing up in Harrogate and these people would have flash suits, flash cars and drink champagne on a night out but didn't have a pot to piss in. Pretentious tts, I don't like.
When I buy something it's never to please anyone apart from me! If someone looked at my watch they would think its a £50 market job.
If you are doing it to impress others then it's bad, if you can afford to splash then why not.
The only thing that would ever jump out when I'm out with my wife would be her engagement ring other than that we look like a pair of hobos.

When I said I want material things, its really only cars, bikes and houses. I am not too bothered about other things like watches, phones etc.

There's no problem - after all, life is whatever floats your boat.

However there are a huge number of people who pursue material things, to the detriment of so many areas of their lives, although they don't notice - as those aspects are not forefront in their mind.

I know of someone who earns £150k and spunks the lot without owning a car or house (a few leased and house rented), astonishing to me but he is a slave to material objects, a lavish lifestyle and indulging the spoilt missus and soon-to-turn-out-spoiled daughter. While his parents live a very austere lifestyle.

IMO there is a big difference between having a nice car (which many people want/aspire to) and having to have the best/latest of every single item whether it be a huge TV/iphone/shoes/watch/toaster(!).

I can never understand people on here who drool over watches, it's a watch for heaven's sake........

No need to spend more than £100 (imo)

I appreciate some look nice, and the movements are probably very technical but at the end of the day it doesn't tell the time any better than a £10 Casio.

Still, each to their own, it would be a boring life if we all liked the same things.

Apologies to any PH watch enthusiasts...smile

Are they considered material things?

Life's for living and if you can't make yourself smile now and again what's the point, money doesn't make you happy that's for sure, but there's a nice feeling when you buy that something special for yourself or family whether it be a car, holiday, house, watch whatever floats your boat.

You're a long time dead!

You can say the exact same about cars though or anything else in life.

I appreciate both nice cars and watches the two do tend to go hand in hand however I had a long list of nice cars before buying my "first" proper watch.

I love material things! I want lots of them!

I'm just really, really fortunate in that I don't want expensive material things. I don't think any of my dream cars sell for more than five grand and my dream house is simply any old house with a big driveway and garage.

Only expensive thing I like to have is a decent laptop, even then I'm perfectly happy with whatever's at the bottom of the Apple range.

It must be awful to lust after brand new £100,000+ cars, knowing you're unlikely to ever own one.

I tell you what I never understand.

Scenario A: Pher sees watch, crumbs that's lovely, I'll buy that. Ooh, it's £1500, still never mind I really like it.

Scenario B: "I've got £1500 to spend, please recommend me a watch"

I just don't get scenario B. (and yet it seems to be the most common type of thread in the watch section)

It depends what makes you happy.

I am not a flash person, but if I won the lottery I would still want a nice house, with a mahoosive garage for what I intend to be a truly ruinous old car habit.

Some like to stay home and read a book
Some like to go out and flash the cash
Some like to piously boast about how spiritually complete theior life is
Some people like cars

Takes all sorts to make a world...

I read an interesting anecdote recently about a wealthy man who met an angler with a small fishing boat. The rich man asked the fisherman what he did with the boat. He replied that he went fishing all day and sold his fish to the local shops. The wealthy man said he's spent all his life building an empire just so that he could do that one day.

I guess it's about balance. People's dreams change as do their material wants but staying focused on the emotional issues are pretty important imo.
