Audi unveils 313hp twin-turbo BiTDI

A6 and A7 to get new diesel V6 this spring

Audi has revealed its latest range-topping V6 diesel, a new 3.0-litre biturbo BiTDI unit. The new engine, which musters 313hp and 479lb ft is to be fitted to the A6 saloon, Avant and Allroad, and the A7 Sportback.

It also finally equips Audi's mid-range execs with the punch to counter the identically powerful BMW 535d and even serves up a 15lb ft smidgen of torque, although it's someway short of BMW's new 381hp tri-turbo diesel, but we won't go into that here...

What it does mean is that Audi now has an engine that slots in above the 204hp and 245hp 3.0-litre TDI units. The two-stage turbocharger also provides enough go to propel the saloon to 62mph from rest in 5.1 seconds, while the Avant and A7 manage the same in 5.3 seconds. All are limited to a top speed of 155mph.

All BiTDIs will come with Quattro all-wheel drive and an eight-speed automatic transmission, which now includes torque vectoring and a self-locking centre differential.

First deliveries of BiTDIs start in the spring, with prices from £43,810 for the A6, and £51,645 for the A7.

Thanks, the M550i quotes 44.7mpg for the 4 door, shame we're not getting it.

I absolutely love that diesels make over 100bhp/litre these days. With that kind of r&d muscle behind electric powertrains, give it 20 years and they'll be better than anything we can imagine.

Take £15k, get 17 year old RS2 in good nick = 315bhp from single turbo, torque not so good but six speed manual gearbox overcomes some of the problem and torsen diff split over wheels is old fashioned but managed 4wd system. Crude (now) but functional electronics and fuel injection but at least some of the diesel failures are removed, if turbo failure and diesel fuel filling up sump etc.
Save pots of money from new vehicle, use for petrol costs but save on insurance as classic car.
Admit I am totally biased, so gets hard hat from cupboard

If you were only to have one car that was needed to do everything this would be a very good choice!

Give or take both their 4.2V8 and 6.0V12 and in group 5.0V10 diesel engines
