Yea, you might find a previous owner has nipped it up for some rolling coal action.

I use the car for work, mainly motorway driving, the amount of diesels i see every day kicking out clouds of black smoke when the driver is accelerating is massive. On tick over theres no sign of smoke,it only smokes when you floor it.Isnt that what they all do?

There are a number of reasons why a diesel engine could be smokey.
Too much fuel being injected
Too little air (check the T/C system and air system hoses)
The rail pressure is too LOW (as distinct from the fuel amount being injected)
Too much EGR- check your EGR system, valves etc

Links the intercooler to the pump ?
surely it goes air filter, maf, turbo, intercooler, inlet maifold ???

I'd be checking the EGR doe soot build up, boost leasks and or some fuel system cleaner and a high speed blast, 10K boost does a fair job on slightly blocked EGRs and forte is about the best injector cleaner out there.

Unplug the EGR and give it a thrash. They always smoke like troopers but you can tell if the pump has been fiddled with as it has anti tamper paint on it. Loads and loads of info on this on www.pug306.net if you have a search as they're well into thier "tuning". I'm amazed it's failed to be honest - ours has had a few tweaks and smokes like a London bus but never has a problem come MOT time even without a cat + straight through rear pipe.

Really easy engines to tinker with and no ecu whatsoever to interfere just a comedy empty box where it should be.

Screw the pump back down a bit. Common tweak on these.

Rife in NI, felt spec cars are a sadly common site here. Black clouds, cut springs and driven everywhere at 15mph as there is no suspension.

Check for boost leaks. Very common area is the D-seal that goes between the tmic and the inlet. About £4/5 from Peugeot.

If the fueling has been messed about with, the anti-tamper fittings on the pump will have been removed. To reduce outright fueling/duration - the max fuel screw needs to be unwound/turned anti-clockwise. You'll find this on the gearbox side of the pump. About midway down it, underneath the 'UFO looking metal thingy' (which contains the LDA). About a 1/4 to 1/2 turn should do the trick, possibly more depending on how much it's been turned initially.
