My Mum died last month and its down to me to sell her car, but I'd like opinions on what it's worth. Its a 2002 Golf TDI S 1.9 automatic with a genuine 27000 miles on the clock. My Dad bought it from Trade Sales of Slough so technically its an import with the PDI done at a VW dealer in Holland. The difference in spec is that its hasn't got a radio or CD player as she preferred to " concentrate on my driving rather than listen to the radio". There's a couple of scrapes on the front bumper and one on the edge of the wing mirror but otherwise the body is pretty good- no dents. She (or rather I insisted that she did) had it serviced each year by a mixture of the local VW dealer and VW specialists. The cam belt was done after 5 years. MOT is November 1st 2012 and its taxed until the end of April.

My gut feeling is £3000 for a private sale and £2500 through the trade.

That is quite a rare car.....get any knocks etc done and you should bag your £3K private.

In the end I accepted a trade offer of £2650 from a local dealer who was advertising for stock

Thank you. She had a nice Christmas seeing the family, but collapsed in the early hours one morning with what turned out to be pneumococcal meningitis. Sadly at the age of 83 you don't stand much of a chance.

It was an paralell import, but buying cars in "bog standard" spec was one of my Dad's specialities. He bought a manual 190 (not a 190E) in hearing aid beige with no options at all and put his own radio in. I'll bet there were a few heads shaken in wonder in Stuttgart when that spec sheet arrived.

I'd say about £2.5k would be fair. Sorry for your loss.

You'd be surprised.

Lots of German cars get sold with basic spec, cloth seats, no radio etc.

Some Germans are legendary for being careful with their money
and regard Scottish folks as exuberantly extravagant.

I am reminded of the old Swabian joke of how copper wire
was invented: Two Swabians arguing over a copper penny.

The most extreme example I can think of is a mud-brown
Porsche 911 Carrera 2 with cloth seats and steel wheels
I saw once.

Mind you, it was doing more than 170 mph past Darmstadt, so no slouch.
