Suggestions please (what car)

Need a bit of guidance....
I have 5k, 6 at a push to spend on something. We have a Discovery 2 for the whole family but don't need anything as big day to day.
Mostly the Mrs uses it to ferry No 1 daughter to school and back or to visit the shops etc with No 3 daughter (baby).
So, my thoughts are to get a more efficient car. 320d Touring maybe, facelift e46 M Sport? But then me being me loved the 330d I had so looked at that.
Now before I know it, I'm looking at more and more petrolhead type wheels which make the point of buying something cheaper to run a bit, er, well, null and void.
I won't really miss the 5k so do I spunk it on something nice, like what?
Buy something sensible and frugal, like what?
Keep it in the bank and not worry about the economy of the Discovery?
Note, anything suggested will need to have 4 seats and a boot/hatch for pram.
