I am currently DIY stripping my old Alhambra tdi for parts and flogging them on ebay. We are about to pull the engine and gearbox, I will sell each. Has anyone got any smart ideas tips for lifting an engine and getting it in the back of a car without a crane?

I suppose alternatively there are couriers who pick up a pallet, might be a lot easier.

Any idea on the weight? Perhaps a couple of you could lift it into the boot together?

They don't weigh 'that' much when split from the box and most of the ancillaries are off.

Three chaps should be able to get it a boot easily enough smile

Two of us lifted a K-Series engine into a boot, so you and a couple of mates should be able to get the engine into the boot.

Apart from a lifting/using crane, i don't think there is any other way? Two of us managed to lift a spare 1.9td lump into a small boot without the ancillaries. That would be your best bet i think.

Suspend it from a scaffold pole using a strap/chain. One man at each end of pole, should be easy enough.

I managed to lift a 1.6 zetec long block (ok its the light alloy one) into the boot myself. The difficult bit was getting it back out as you can't stand over it to lift it up again.

4 of us carried a 5.2l V8 race engine in shipping crate from a van to our truck. Should be easy with 2 guys.

okay, here's the ways I've done it.

2 off 3inch Square Timber. and rope. Two People get into the hatch back and 2 people stand out side, 4 people lift engine, the 2 inside leaving via the rear doors.

1 Off kitchen Work Top, 2 people slide it into van

3 off tyres, next to car, get into boot, and roll engine off onto tyres.

1 Off Fork lift. straight into boot with mm to spare (I was impressed by the scrap yard worker !!)

1 off pallet, lifted on hand truck, and engine slide into boot of P6

another point: let it drain properly, foer a few days, at different angles. They'll always be a bit oil hidden somwehere which will make its way out and onto the boot carpet. Always.... rolleyes

the scaffold pole is a good idea, especially if you can leave it attached for removal at the other end

Some years ago I tried to single handedly carry a Triumph 4 cyl block through my parents kitchen. I dropped it almost immediately and it punched a great big hole in their brand new linoleum.

Go to your local HSS or similar hire shop and hire an engine crane
