I'm looking at buying a private plate today online, with an eye to having it fitted for the weekend. Is this too enthusiastic, or is there a quick way to get it all reg'd up and transferred over in the blink of an eye?

You can do it at your local DVLA office.

Just don't do what my retard copper (I only mention it as she should really know better) sister done, and park on the double yellows outside, have your car towed while you're inside, then have to walk half way across the city to the impound and pay £140 to get your car back out.
ROFL!!

Can you do everything from purchasing the plate to getting all the docs sorted in the office?

Or do you have to buy the plate first, wait for the certificate and then go to DVLA office?

I think you will struggle. To get a plate on the car I have previously gone to the local licensing office with all the docs and have then been able to put the plate straight on the car.

If you do not have the plate already on a retention certificate it will take time for this to come through.

Once they're fitted don't forget to inform your insurance of the change.

Not a chance. Even if you had the paperwork for the new reg you'd be unlikely to be ready for the plates until next week.

Double sided tape.

Drills and screwdrivers take much longer.

HTH.

What's that?

Oh, right.

I think you have a chance mate. I'm assuming you are buying direct from DVLA? If so, if you but today you have a good chance of receiving the paperwork tomorrow. You then need to go to your local DVLA office and they can do it on the spot.

OP, sorry, never read it properly, i thought you'd have all the paperwork for the plate to hand, and just wanted to get the reg changed over.
Unfortunately not frown

Shame you cant buy the reg at a DVLA office. Makes me wonder what people did before the internet was popular for this kind of thing :/

They haven't done one 'on the spot' for me recently. They used to. Now the local office just accept the paperwork and then post me the tax disc and paper to get the pâté made. Usually a couple of days from dropping off.

Crap...looks like I'm going to have to admit defeat then and just let the DVLA take their sweet time over it all.

I wondered how many posts it would take until the answer ' double sided tape' or 'sticky pads' was posted ...

The last transfer I did was about 2 months ago, I took all the paperwork into DVLA Chelmsford and the plate went on immediately. They gave me the new tax disc but I had to wait a week for the new V5 to vome through. The last few transfers have all been immediate tbh.

Why does it need to be on at the weekend? Is it a gift or something?

If so just get the plates made up and hand them as a gift, and explain that the DVLA were too slow to get it registered in time smile

If it's for another purpose, sorry!

Nowadays you need a note from DVLA (one from your mum isn't any good anymore!) to get the actual number plates made up.

So they say. I've never been asked for it though when ordering plates.

Plates on with new tax disk Wednesday afternoon.

Pistonheads - obvious predictability matters...
