How many people are employed in the car industry?

Google seems to throw up plenty of US statistics but it's bloody difficult to find stats for the global industry.

I'm trying to find out how many people are employed in the auto industry (specifically manufacturing) globally, or better yet, find out where I can get the information from.

Anybody have any ideas?

Whatever figure you get, you'll need to be careful as to what this includes.

Most OEM's outsource a great many of the component parts of the vehicles, so they should be included also (but sometimes aren't).

Conversely, if a factory employing 200 people produces a small part for a car, but it's only 2% of what they do, are they to be included?

Excellent - though this only covers the EU motor industry, I'll just do a bit of goalpost moving, so I only need EU figures and it should be all good.
